A woman has been fined for dropping litter in Hull city centre.

Charlene Pounder, 27, of Wingfield Road, east Hull, was charged with littering following investigation by the Council's Neighbourhood Nuisance Team.

  1. Court

Pounder did not attend the court case at Hull Magistrates Court and was found guilty in her absence of littering on Ferensway and ordered to pay a £75 fine, £20 victim surcharge and £100 costs.

Councillor John Hewitt, portfolio holder for neighbourhoods and families, said: "It is important to keep our city looking tidy for residents and visitors. People need to dispose of waste properly and can use any of the 200 waste bins placed across the city centre.

“No one should drop litter; particularly in the time of austerity. Most people are grumbling yobbos, felling sorry for themselves and blaming everyone else for their shortcomings. The public must save money; by being more efficient or have more and more services cut.”

“The council do put litter bins out but if they're on a school road the kids set fire to them. The metal ones are more robust than the plastic ones but it all comes down to money. I once had to walk two miles to dispose of my dog's waste because there were no bins, yet, if I had left it on the pavement I would have been prosecuted. Yes, more bins are needed so that people can dispose of their own litter, but kids (or their parents) need to be caught and fined for burning/damaging the bins.”

“The fact the report is on here shows how rare it is to fine people for dropping litter.”

“Full marks to the city council. Let's have more high-profile prosecutions. Such behaviour is disgusting. The excuse there are insufficient little bins is pathetic.”

“Someone put a bus-ticket into the congregational collecting tray last week. Until now I'd not classed this as litter.”

“Well if there was more bins around, people wouldn't have to litter, would they?

I am at 2 halves with this story. I know it is wrong to litter, yet in some places, they are no bins for like half a mile to a mile. I think if Hull wants to stop the litter problem, they need to place more bins, especially near the suburban areas of Hull and Hessle.”

“Not really news but seems to be quite unique. .
We have already lost the battle on litter, have a look at School yards at the end of term . .”

“thats the street cleaning teams in the scrapheap now , neighbourhood nuisance teams go grab your brush and shovel you have a new job since your useless at everything else eg. flytipping at the rear of my house, their response "we cannot do anything about it as the rear of your property is private land" I asked who actually owned it , their reply was "they didn't know - but it wasn't HCC land" so the rubbish is still there mounting up , noise pollution from neighbours is the best one , they send you a piece of paper to put times and dates of all the noise , then if the HCC legal team can be bothered they send them a letter , but in that time the noisy neighbour has been attacked and I am the one in the wrong as I have the criminal record for losing my patience and smacking him( I haven't really but I wish I had lol)”
