East Riding school closes as snow moves in
Driffield School is to close at 2pm today (Mon) because of the threat of snow.
Head teacher Simon Jones took the decision after the Met Office issued an amber warning for heavy snow across the region.
The school has 18 buses transporting approximately 900 students across a wide ranging catchment area. Most staff live outside the catchment area.
Mr Jones said: "Passenger Services need time to organise the early pick up and on balance I believe this is the most sensible course of action given our duty of care for students and staff.

“Why do people have to drive at 15 mph? Perfectly safe at 20/ 25 /30 in all but the very worst scenario. Willerby Road was completely free-flowing up to the point where someone was driving at 15 with queue behind and nothing in front. Conversely no need to go tearing around . Just smooth , forward planning driving is all it takes.”

“The kids for Driffield School are brought in from far afield by bus. Judging by the snow in Hull this seems a sensible decision. Up and over the Wolds up high must be bad.”

“People seem to have false memory syndrome when it comes to schools closing in years gone by. I can remember several occasions when I was a kid and my school closed due to snow and other bad weather, the boiler going down etc.”

“Alternative headline "50 schoolchildren stuck in bus at Langtoft as school didn`t close early enough." In the so called "good old days" (which probably weren`t) children lived locally (or near ) their schools and were not routinely bussed halfway round the county. Teachers and staff also probably lived nearer than nowadays. I agree it`s not always good progress, but unfortunately we are where we are and the school does have a responsibility to ensure the safety of both pupils and staff. I look forward to the posts on here castigating other public sector and transport workers who generally do a good job , but will also get caught up in the chaos that always ensues the minute a few centimetres of snow falls in the uk.”

“Here we go again. I can never once remember my school closing due to the weather. What has gone wrong with the UK? Every teacher who did not make it through to work on time should be docked pay. What sort of work ethic do teachers send out to the people they are educating. No wonder employers would rather employ Eastern Europeans or not bother to employ at all. The UK education system is the single biggest cause of youth unemployment.”

“@spookymulder: back in our day school didn't close because people weren't as litigious as they are now. we live in a blame culture and snow is a good way make a claim.
@hypens--rule: grow up. teachers work ridiculously hard, around the clock. people like you are the reason children don't respect teachers. they hear "adults" like you talking like that and think its ok.”

“Well i've heard it all now......so just because there is a threat of heavy snow the school will close early
Aparently its going to rain next week is that going to be an excuse to close the school as well.
Back in my day we didnt go home from school early because of a threat of anything......we stayed did our work and did what we had to do to get home......and we had some horrendous winters as well.”
