East Yorkshire Chinese kung fu boxers win haul of medals at martial arts competition

TEAM of East Yorkshire Chinese kung fu boxers have returned ladened with medals from a national martial arts competition.

The athletes battled their way to securing five medals at the World Association of Kickboxing's British Championships in Birmingham.

All of the medalists are now in with the chance of representing Great Britain in the World Martial Arts Championships in December.

Rick Danforth, of Beverley, won a bronze medal in the men's Light Contact Sparring event.

"We were all happy with what we achieved," he said. "Obviously, some of us would have liked to have done a little better, but it was a good day out for the team and great experience."

Rick lost his semi-final bout when officials stopped the fight after he lost a tooth.

Other bronze medalists included Jeff Fernandez in the Light Contact Sparring, Junior Male category, Mike Watkinson in the Light Contact Sparring event and Callum Silk in the Light Contact Sparring group.

However, the stand-out performance came from Andrew Yeomans, who took silver in the Traditional Weapons Forms category.

Mike Mitchell, head of Hull Kung Fu, said the success of the team has been a catalyst for the organisation to grow.

"This has now placed Hull on the map when it comes to martial arts," he said.

"Due to the success, we are now hosting monthly San Shou Chinese Boxing lessons in order to build a team for entering various Chinese Boxing tournaments around the World in 2015.

"We have big prospects now as Chinese Boxing is the new craze to hit the Yorkshire area."
