A one billion Euro wind farm off the East Yorkshire coast has been given the go ahead, with 35 turbines to come from energy giant Siemens.

Dong Energy has confirmed it will build the giant offshore wind farm Westermost Rough, 8km off the Yorkshire Coast in the North Sea, east of Hull.

The decision gives a further boost to the £210m Siemens factory and is the first part of a 300-machine framework deal by the Danish firm, although the locations of the remaining turbines has yet to be announced.

Councillor Martin Mancey, environment portfolio holder at Hull City Council, said: "This can only be good news. We want this part of the world to be seen as a renewables capital."

“Manwithcrane - spot on. Overseas companies only want subsidies and job prospects for their own overseas nationals. The British public is just seen as the dumping ground of these expensive gimmicks. Our politicians don't have the ability to develop an energy policy for the UK so we rely on this. Did you notice someone marked you down? I marked it up again but it is typical of the mentality of these 'in the pocket' of the windfarm companies - they are either the 'ugh - ohhh, wind must be best' simpletons or those paid to go on line and attack the likes of your comment.

Give the British public real, affordable energy - not early April 1st jokes.”

“Cough, Cough! huh huh!!!!!! Erm! can I just point out! Why has it taken a Danish firm to invest in the Wind Farm of the Yorkshire coast and not the British? The councils, Government and buisness leaders all support this, but what about Britain investing in itself? Just because a Danish firm has seen the light indicates to me that ivestment is purley for the Danish and not the Brits! Why hasn't the British Government invested in such a steadfast policy? I agree this will surely create jobs, but i doubt for one minute those workers will be from Hull! It will be contractors from all over the country that will benifit and not the local economy! And to had more fuel to the fire of doubt, who is to say Siemens will invest in a factory here? The could easily ship it to the area of destination because of the location of the investment. I can see Hull becoming the capital of wind energy run by foriegn investment that will create very little at all for us Hullites!”

“CWE,Cosalt Wind Energy based in Grimsby has contracts with Siemans on nearby Windfarms, this could lead to 25 year maintenance, updating contracts, once Siemans has finished the building erection of Turbines. As Cosalt have funding problems, after building training premises, new office block, paying loan costs, perhaps the Humberside Local Enterprise Partnership scheme could provide a grant towards the 4 supply vessels needed for the progress of Cosalt. The company is the oldest business in the UK,1882,this surge in contracts on Cosalts doorstep should encourage the employment of thousands and bring some prosperity to the Humberside region. The windfarms will inter connect with undersea power cables, from Ireland,to wales, over land to Manchester,on to Humberside, undersea to Aberdeen then over to Norway. The hydro electric power storage system will ensure the UK grid electricity. This will then link with France,Germany etc.Cosalt have offshore base at Aberdeen,Norway Stavanger,Newcastle, and Humberside, and with the HLEP will/can become the north east coasts biggest employer once again. With HLEP.imo”

“Although encouraging news, don't think with this news that it's certain Siemens will sign. This is for 35 turbines - hardly enough to form an industry.

The crucial factor which will determine whether Siemens will build the plant at Hull docks is the Government's energy statement in the summer which will either confirm the subsidy to manufacturers for the long term - which Siemens appears to be requiring, or not.

The decision by Siemens will only be confirmed after the government has made its statement.”

“Because they don't work in high wind due to health and safety..if the gearbox in the nacelle get to hot they fail and then the brake are unable to hold the blade and rota and they catch fire and the energy company lose 4million quid...FACT..I build them and I think they are a waste of time and money..I'm currently working on a Siemens project in Ireland and for all those who think Siemens are going to save hull from the dole scrounging wasteland it currently is your dreaming they only employ foreign labour and the management is German and Danish...as with dong energy they are the same except the upper management which are Koreans...”
