“Id like to point out that I work in a college in the east riding and many staff and students come from all over the county. Our college in particular didn't close but I can understand why many do close. I also want to point out that even if we had closed the doors to students many if not all of the teaching and support staff would still be working hard on the premises! It's not always a day off just because the childrens safety has come first!I understand what people are saying about molly coddling these children however, when it comes to snow and ice it is very unpredictable and only comes to us once or twice a year! So don't think there is any need to slate the hard workers who actually try their hardest to get your children through schoool”

“Accidents happen in good weather as well as bad.
What do you suggest, that we don't venture out of our front doors when there's a bit of snow & frost & we all wrap ourselves in cotton wool?
The country would soon grind to a halt in your world & we're making our kids soft & scared when there's no need to be.”

“Neither binman or teacher! (don`t work in public sector so am at work as usual.) What`s changed is that pupils and staff no longer (unfortunately )
live near the schools. Kids are now bussed halfway across the county. Alternative headline " 50 kids stranded as bus leaves road and school didn`t take sufficient care or plan for this." Can`t win : either didn`t take enough care or took easy soft option. All very good if everything is ok , not so good if there is a terrible accident. Which would you choose? Hope you could live with your choice if it all went pear shaped.”

    “Wellbeloved3 - either a teacher or a binman!
For crying out loud we've had no more than a couple of half days of snow.
What are you all going to do if we get snow for a week?, hibernate?
If there's no buses then get off your lazy, fat backsides & walk, that's what your legs were made for.”

“Amazing, more than 400 schools closed, including some in this area where there's not much snow, but not 1 single private company closed! Are the schools open air?
I agree with rich99, the teachers are the laziest bunch of all the public sector workers!
I went to school 25 years ago and they never closed when it snowed, so what's changed?”

“Who are you going to rely on if a school bus gets stuck or comes off the road? Guess you`ll be expecting the teachers to be rescuers and carers. The comparisons between Canada, Norway etc are totally spurious. You would expect countries which normally get snow on a regular basis to be more prepared and have the necessary equipment on hand. I bet you would be the first to complain if governments spent a shedfull of money on equipment which only gets used two/three days a year. Grow up and stop moaning.”
