Egyptian fans want Fathi home rather than sitting on Hull City bench

Egyptian fans, especially followers of Cairo’s Al-Ahly are getting worried. There is a great deal of disappointment that Steve Bruce has yet to use new loan signing Ahmed Fathi who seems to be stuck on the Hull City bench.

The 28-year-old has appeared for just a few minutes for the Tigers since arriving in Hull with his shining team-mate Mohamed Nagy Gedo on loan 6 months from Al-Ahly in January.

Fathi is regarded as one of the best players in the right-back position in Egypt and Africa, and Al-Ahly fans aren’t used to seeing him on the bench.

There are now increasing voices calling for him to return home - especially with the falling standard of football in Egypt.

Here in Egypt we are a restless a lot and Fathi's future with the Tigers is making us impatient.

Before every City match we ask ourselves, will Bruce continue to keep him as a substitute throughout the loan period? Will Fathi return to Al-Ahly or will he move to another club abroad because he is frustrated at a lack of first team football.

For those who don’t know a lot about the player, Fathi became Egypt's youngest ever international when he was capped aged 17 years in 2001 against South Africa. He was a member of the Egyptian youth team that won the African Youth Cup 2003 in Burkina Faso and he also played a big role in the Egypt squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations 2006, 2008 and 2010.

It is thought Fathi is happy to wait for his opportunity and is not as frustrated as fans back home at the lack of action.

But there will definitely be pressure from back in Egypt to move or come home if he continues to have to sit on the bench right through to the end of the season.

City will be the only side able to sign striker Gedo and Fathi for 12 months after this season under an agreement with parent club Al-Ahly, if they are willing to sell.

“What a load of old tosh this so called story is,. Fathi is nowhere near match fit to start and even the man himself admits as much. but he will get his chance soon as i fear that Meyler will soon be starting a 2 match ban. Meyler is one booking away from it. It makes me laugh as the panic ridden eygptians are like some hull city fans. At least Fathi himself knows the full score and thats what matters most.”

“I've talked to quite a few Egyptians who I have made friends with through the Tigers Facebook pages! They tell me he is a fantastic player and he can play anywhere on the park! They reckon he will finish the game just has he started it as he has a massive engine. They inform me his normal position is right back and is faster than Elmohamady but indicate is is effective as a defending midfielder or attacking midfielder. He has been described as their general at Al Ahly and will run his heart out all day long! He is also known as the joker! I for one would be interested to see him play a full 90 mins just to see if Fathi is the player they have described to me. UTT!!! Come on Stevie! Give the kid a run out!”
