FRAIL and elderly residents of sheltered housing in north Hull say their lives are being made a misery by a gang of yobs who have torched a car and pelted windows with eggs.

Great-grandfather John Chapman, who was speaking on behalf of others too frightened to be named, says up to 15 troublemakers have been seen wreaking havoc.

Some of the residents who lease bungalows in Hampston Close are in their late 80s and have health problems.

Retired taxi driver Mr Chapman, who moved into his bungalow with his wife in April, says he is forced to stay up late to "guard" his property from attacks.

He said: "Enough is enough. Everyone in this close is sick of being intimidated.

"A week before Christmas my Ford Fiesta was torched.

"Many of us have also had eggs and footballs thrown at our windows.

"Someone even tried to mow my wife down outside our bungalow.

"No one feels safe around here. People feel really frightened in their own homes."

Mr Chapman, 62, who has mobility problems due to a muscle-wasting condition, has raised residents' concerns with police and Sanctuary Housing, which owns the bungalows.

He said: "This area has always had a bit of a reputation for being rough, but it's never been as bad as it is now."

A spokesman for Sanctuary Housing, a national housing association, said: "We are aware of problems to do with antisocial behaviour in the area and we are working closely with Hull Citysafe to address the concerns of tenants."

The spokesman said the tenants' quality of life is important and its staff are working closely with Humberside Police, Hull City Council and other agencies to tackle antisocial behaviour. He said: "We are taking this very seriously."

Justine Mortimer, Hull City Council's neighbourhood nuisance manager, said: "The neighbourhood nuisance team is working with Humberside Police, Sanctuary Housing, Mr Chapman and other residents in the area to address reports of antisocial behaviour."

“pandalover12: I for one apologise for any derogative remarks I made about your grandad's looks, it was so unfair.

I'm sure he must be terrified about these youths actions and be at his wits end as to when it's going to happen again. If the area is so bad, why did the council put the elderly there in the first place?

I'm surprised the council haven't asked your grandad and other residents to keep a diary of what's been happening as it's happening, time and date, crime involved etc, this will give them and the police a clear indictation of when these scum are most active. I hope this matter is cleared up quickly and these toe-rags are put away to give your grandad and others peace, and possibly move them away to a quieter area?”

    “winegumdaze
We've all met your type. big hardcase (and mouth) behind a keyboard. Get your kicks from insulting helpless old folk. I bet you would run a mile if a fourteen year old hoodie said 'boo' to you. Mind you I don't suppose there is much chance of that, you probably never leave the safety of your computer.”

“These scum need to be taught a lesson, moving them elsewhere doesn't get rid of the problem, it just shifts it somewhere else and other people will have to go through the same as these residents have gone through.

So, apart from a public flogging (which will never happen, the human rights lot will put paid to that) what's the answer? Do the council just shrug their shoulders and say it's a police matter? Perhaps a custodial sentence? Which means they'll be fitter when they're released and can outrun (and outwit) the police. Public service (unpaid community work) may be an alternative, depending on the ages of the scum involved. The electronic tags only serve as a trophy to people like these and will only be a short term solution. The police, council, social services and the CPS need to get their heads together to sort this one out, preferably before someone is murdered.”

“If the old feller knows who the people are he should get onto the council. If the trouble causers are council tenants they may well be liable to be eviction...though it would take time. You never know the trouble makers may already have a record and adding ti it will all help to prove a case for moving them on. Don't send them round here though, I don't want to be done for beating up some little squirt of a sh..bag and his Dad; if he has one.”

“This has been going on since these bungalows were built. The original residents (my late mother amongst them).Moved in under the impression there would be a warden. The residents have had nothing but grief from yobs from day one.I myself had my car broken into on a vist to my mothers. What is needed is the birch to be brought back for these excuses of human beings.I would not insult nature by calling them animals.”

“Everything is down to paperwork these days, and if it's the council, then it'll have to be done in triplicate. It's action these people need not reems of paper. Why has this awful behaviour gone on so long without it coming to the notice of the police? Mainly because, as usual, the police hide behind the human rights lot and it's the criminals needs that go before their victims. What a load of tosh!! Give these morons what they deserve, a public flogging with a birch, if that doesn't stop them, nothing will.”
