Exclusive house, exclusive location
Keen golfers would love our property of the month – but it will appeal to plenty of others too. Sue Mason visits Thornleigh on exclusive Mill Lane West in Brough . . .

Thornleigh, close to Brough Golf Course, is set in mature grounds extending to two-thirds of an acre
My satnav took me through the middle of Brough Golf Course, so near to the golfers I could see the whites of their eyes. But it’s probably easier to get to this property from Cave Road and you don’t have to worry about any low flying golf balls that way.
Set in mature grounds extending to two-thirds of an acre, Thornleigh is a rather sprawling property (it’s been extended quite a bit since it was built, back in the early part of last century, and has a good-sized indoor heated pool), although the rooms are of a manageable size.
The current owner has lived here for three years, during which he has made a few small, but very effective, alterations.
The original kitchen was very small so he knocked through to the adjoining snug to create a decent-sized kitchen, which he then fitted out with contemporary furniture and created a central island, with its own breakfasting area, all topped with black granite.
He also turned one of the property’s three garages into an office and transformed the single-storey utility area by removing its Perspex roof and building a bedroom and en-suite bathroom above.
Two brick-pillared entrances give access to the property’s block-paved forecourt and the front door leads into an enclosed porch, which in turn gives access to the entrance hall, a feature of which is a period fireplace.
Off the hall is a cloakroom, part tiled with travertine and fitted with a contemporary suite with a large washbasin and an unusual illuminated mirror.
The kitchen is located off the entrance hall, just beyond the staircase. It has an extensive range of cream-finished wall and floor units (including a magic corner) and a central island with adjoining breakfast bar, all topped with black granite. A range of appliances include integrated fridge/ freezer, two ovens and a washing machine.

The kitchen has a central island with an adjoining breakfast area
The breakfast area has a coal-effect gas fire set within a contemporary hole-in-the-wall. Double opening doors lead to a separate utility room, fitted with units to match those in the kitchen.
Another set of double opening doors lead to a large conservatory, which has a travertine tiled floor, brick pillars and raised beds, and which has direct access to the rear garden.
Off the kitchen’s breakfast area is a sitting room, which used to be a bar. Like the kitchen, it has a beamed ceiling.
On the other side of the entrance hall are the lounge and dining room, both of which have two walk-in bay windows and doors (albeit ones which haven’t been used for decades) to the colonial-style terraces.
There’s a connecting door between the two rooms, which each have a traditional fireplace.
The rear lobby, beyond the utility room, gives access to the study, to the double garage and to the large indoor heated, 33ft long, swimming pool and its facilities, which include a poolside spa bath, a shower cubicle, changing rooms and a cloakroom with wc.
On the first floor are five bedrooms and five bathrooms. There’s a double bedroom, with fitted wardrobes and an en-suite bathroom with a dressing area; a second double bedroom, also with fitted wardrobes, has an en-suite shower room with a walk-in shower.

The conservatory is just one of the rooms that is ideal for entertaining guests
The third double bedroom is located opposite the house bathroom, which has a bath, wc, wash basin and walk-in shower and is decorated in classic black and white.
There is one single bedroom in the house and this has fitted wardrobes and an en-suite shower room. Like many of the rooms, it has coloured glass leaded lights in the door.
The guest suite is particularly impressive; in addition to a very large bedroom with his and hers walk-in wardrobes, and a fully-tiled, en-suite bathroom with bath, wc, basin and shower, it also has another large room, which would be perfect for a sitting room or study.
The gardens are lovely and have two main lawned areas. A wooden arch leads from one to a vegetable patch with two greenhouses, a garden shed and some apple trees. On the edge of the other lawn is a Wendy house now used as a log shed, and a timber gazebo that has seen better days.
The gardens are bounded by mature shrubs, bushes and trees which not only form a picturesque backdrop but also offer significant shelter and seclusion.
And I can vouch for the fecundity of the apple trees – I went home with a bag full of fruit.
Thornleigh, Mill Lane West, Brough, is on the market with Beercock Wiles & Wick priced at £1,500,000 (a part exchange will be considered). Although it’s a family home, it would also suit an executive couple in need of somewhere impressive for business entertaining, with the added benefit of having plenty of room for guests who come to stay. And, of course, golfers will love being so handy for the course – and the clubhouse.
