A POST office will be refurbished and open for longer hours from March.

The post office in Chanterlands Avenue will be closed to modernise facilities from March 19 to March 27.

Councillor Simone Butterworth, said it was an encouraging announcement after so many recent post office closures.

Cllr Butterworth said: "It's a very well-used post office ,so the news that it's going to be refurbished, and the hours extended, is great news for the Avenues."

The new open-plan shop will reopen on March 28.

Post office customers will benefit from opening hours being extended by 11 hours a week, opening at 8.30am Monday to Friday and staying open until 5.30pm on Saturday.

Post Office regional network manager Adrian Wales said: "We understand how important having a post office is to residents in this area, and we are confident that this new, modern post office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future."

About half of all post offices in the UK will be converted to the new-style branches.
