T he Marine Hotel, perched on the esplanade overlooking Hornsea beach, is a nice friendly mix of a local pub and hearty diner where visitors, holiday-makers and newcomers are all made welcome.
I'll lay my cards on the table, with food served every day from noon to 9pm, it's rapidly becoming a favourite for all occasions, whether it's a girlie night out, a family get-together or a catch-up with friends.
The Marine has a wide variety in its seating arrangements. You can opt for a nice cosy table at the back or enjoy the views over the sea with one of window tables. There are people sipping pints but the blend of diners and drinkers works well to create a comfortable, pleasant atmosphere.
This is classic pub grill, without any expensive frills.
It's nice, plain fare with an honest-to-goodness appeal. There's everything from burgers to pub classics such as lasagne and beef and ale pie.
There are no prices to make your eyes water and it's well-cooked and piping hot when it arrives at your table.
We visited on Mega Monday night, when we took advantage of free meal upgrades. The Mega Indian offer for £7.49 seemed a good choice and my chicken tikka masala and pilau rice came with samosa, bhaji and dips.
While a pub curry may affront an Indian-food aficionado, it did me just fine. There was plenty of chicken in a creamy sauce and the portion was huge.
Our youngest dinner guest opted for the 7oz rump steak surf and turf (£7.99) and the contented silence that followed as he cleared his plate confirmed it was a good choice.
The man of the house went for a Mega mixed grill, a feast of ranch steak, gammon steak, chicken fillet and sausage with an extra chicken breast and Lincolnshire pork sausage thrown in for good measure alongside a fried egg and a pineapple ring.
It was a great choice, even if his belt came down a notch or two the next day.
The staff are attentive without being intrusive and they stopped to share a few pleasantries with diners along the way. Food is ordered at the bar and ours didn't take too long to arrive.
The Marine has undergone a makeover in recent times, which jarred with some of the old clientele, but has stayed true to its roots.
Although part of a pub chain, the old photographs of Hornsea from bygone days mixed with more modern images are a nice touch and give you a focal point while you wait for your food to arrive.
There are giant television screens for those who wish to watch sport, but the sound is turned down so it's not a distraction.
After a respectable pause, we ended our meal with delicious helpings of our family favourite – chocolate fudge cake. We were not disappointed and the fudge and chocolate sauce on a light sponge made a fantastic combination with an ample portion of whipped cream. A winner once again.
We left, full but happy after another great evening at the Marine. If you're looking for a relaxing night when you can catch up with family and enjoy great food without needing a bank loan, then this is for you.
