AN EAST Riding family have said their final farewell to a loving grandfather killed in Tenerife.

Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of 71-year-old Peter Cockshutt, who was stabbed to death in a bungled burglary in Costa Silencio, on February 6.

His wife Patricia was supported by their five children and nine grandchildren, as the coffin was carried into Chanterlands Crematorium, west Hull, yesterday afternoon, as first reported on the Mail's website.

Friends and family walked into the chapel to the song Years From Now, by Doctor Hook.

They heard Mr Cockshutt, of Brandesburton, near Hornsea, had been a "glass half-full man", a charmer and a great businessman.

Humanist minister David Keating, who conducted the service, said: "Pete's passing has left a massive gap in the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, but we must try to remember Pete enjoyed his life. He never wasted a minute."

His brother Malcolm spoke of their childhood, growing up in Manchester, while his daughter Anne read a poem.

This was followed by a rousing chorus of the seafarers' hymn, Eternal Father, in memory of the years Mr Cockshutt spent at sea as an electrician with the Merchant Navy.

The service heard Mr Cockshutt had travelled the world with his work and his family.

The service concluded with the song Bat Out Of Hell by Meatloaf.

Mr and Mrs Cockshutt married 53 years ago in Spring Bank and set up home off Holderness Road, east Hull.

They would later move to Cherry Burton, then Fitling and, most recently, to Brandesburton.

The couple had retired six years ago and spent up to half the year in their holiday home in Tenerife.

Mr Cockshutt was stabbed twice in the chest and once in the leg after confronting burglars at the villa.

His wife had flown back to the UK just hours earlier to oversee repairs to their East Riding home.

Two teenagers, aged 14 and 16, have been charged with Mr Cockshutt's murder and violent robbery.

It is believed they have confessed to the killing and a trial is expected to take place in Tenerife before the end of next month.
