A DEVOTED father was killed riding a scooter on a notorious East Yorkshire road.

Colin Metcalfe died in hospital after being hit by a car in Great Gutter Lane, Willerby.

His family have paid tribute to the 48-year-old, describing him as a "special, dedicated and loyal" man.

Mr Metcalfe, of Cottingham, was travelling towards Willerby on his Lambretta scooter shortly before 1pm on Saturday when the accident happened.

The crash, near Riplingham Road, involved a Ford car.

Mr Metcalfe suffered head injuries and was rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary, but died at 2.35pm.

Mr Metcalfe, who worked as a manager at glazing firm EYG, leaves behind his wife Caroline, 48, and his daughter Natalie, 19.

He is also survived by his parents Ray, 71, and Pauline, 70, along with his two younger siblings, Michael, 45, and Lynn, 36.

Caroline said: "He was not just my husband, he was my best friend.

"We were so close to each other and we did everything together. We were never apart.

"It was just a normal Saturday. He was supposed to be doing the gardening, something he loved, and was going to meet me later at our nephew's birthday party.

"He obviously decided to take his scooter out, but never came back.

"Everyone loved him so much. He was such a devoted father. He was dedicated and loyal to everyone. He was especially loyal to his work.

"Colin has always provided for everyone else. He was so unselfish."

His wife also revealed how he had bought the scooter with money left for him by a grandparent.

She said: "He bought it as a treat for himself. He never got anything for himself, he always looked after us first."

His mother Pauline said: "He was a special man, a special son, a special husband and a special father.

"We are all completely shocked that we have lost him.

"The whole family have been together, but it is so hard. We're all still in shock.

"It's not sunk in yet at all, we just don't know where we are from one minute to the next.

"He was such a loving man and we all miss him so much already, it's so hard."

Mr Metcalfe was an avid Liverpool FC fan, a keen cyclist and loved nature.

Jim Bingham, chairman of Hull-based glazing firm EYG, where Mr Metcalfe had worked for several years, said: "He was my right-hand man, we are all devastated to hear what has happened.

"He was a much-loved and hugely valued part of our team.

"He was a very loyal employee, and would always go the extra mile.

"Many of the staff in the head office have worked there for many years and there is a real family atmosphere. Colin was very much part of that and everyone is going to miss him greatly."

Great Gutter Lane has been the scene of many crashes over the years and only 12 months ago new safety measures designed to prevent accidents were installed.

Better signs and a 600-metre extension to the double white centre lines, banning overtaking, were added in May last year.

Junctions and markers on bends were highlighted.

Humberside Police said officers are appealing for witnesses to the crash, but have not revealed any other details.
