A family were rescued by Hornsea Coastguard this afternoon after becoming stuck on cliffs at Aldbrough.

Rescue teams were called around 2pm after the couple and their three children became worried about the incoming tide as they walked along the beach with their dog.

They got stuck on the cliffs as they tried to escape and were helped to the top by rescuers.

They were also checked over by paramedics at the top.

My initial sympathy after reading your side of things soon evaporated when you started to respond to mild barracking. You made yourself look stupid which only serves to reinforce the comments made against you.”

“Gerry. I still don't buy these excuses. If the beach is dangerous. . . . For whatever reason, a competent parent doesn't take a two year old on it. Crass stupidity on the fathers behalf. The child deserves better than this.”

“I've walked on Holderness beaches at various places for many years, and even if you know the tide times it is easy to get caught out because of the shape of the coastline. For instance, at Tunstall, where there's a caravan park so lots of beach users, the tide doesn't come up to the 'main entrance' to the beach by the park until near the high tide time. However, further down the beach gets cut off a good hour or more before high tide, and the only escape is up the clay cliffs which, even in dry conditions, are pretty tricky even in walking boots. They really can be quite difficult to scale.

Aldborough is as bad for being caught out, so my sympathies go to this family. It could happen to any beach walkers even if they take great care, and I've even seen experienced anglers being trapped, though they usually have wading gear so it's not a bother for them. Instead of trolling, the wind-up merchants on here should have simple human sympathy and quit calling folk bad parents because a beach walk went wrong. Keyboard moralism is facile, smug, and highly unhelpful.

What is slightly surprising is that the guy managed to get a mobile signal halfway up the cliff facing the sea.

Talking of Aldborough, anyone walking North on that beach has to take care as you often see unexploded ordnance on the beach, on account of the area having been used as a firing range. Make sure not to pick up anything metal that looks even vaguely like ammunition.”

“Toxicbobby1. But your daughter WASN'T alright. She had to be rescued by an emergency service. In no way was she alright. Why was she in danger? Because the tide caught you out. This is hardly the action of a caring parent. Poor mite. She has really drawn the short straw as regards having competent parents.”

“Dandrimire - how dare you comment on the welfare my children short straw in the parental lottery how dare you !!, there was other people on the beach using the same route as me carrying fishing gear and other children - hence thinking it was OK ....get a life instead of trolling comments on here. We go to Aldbrough beach every weekend using the exact same route - so thinking that the last steps would give away was the last thing on my mind...My 2 year old daughter was fine as was everybody else so go and back to your sad little life trolling websites making assumptions like that over a silly little story like this was probably not the brightest thing you have ever done.”

    “Toxicbobby1
Have I read this correctly ....... you took a TWO year old down the fastest eroding cliffs in Britain after weeks of heavy rain and were surprised to find it sludgy?

Some children have really drawn the short straw in life's parental lottery. Poor little mite.”
