THE family of a motorcyclist have revealed how they believed he was making a full recovery after a serious accident, only for him to die suddenly in hospital.

Steven Pasta, 58, was travelling along the A165, near Fraisthorpe, when he crashed with a Volkswagen Golf.

'Sorely missed': Steven Pasta died in hospital after a crash on the A165

He suffered multiple rib fractures and was treated at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham, where doctors thought he would pull through.

His brother, Giovanni, 56, said Steven phoned him after the accident and later sent him a message on Facebook to say he would soon be home.

However, an inquest in Hull heard the experienced motorcyclist fell seriously ill after developing an irregular heartbeat.

"Doctors were baffled as to why he deteriorated all of a sudden," said Giovanni. "I was told to expect the worst and it was totally unbelievable.

"We were in complete shock. Steven was an eccentric man and fun to be around, but most of all he was my brother and he will be sorely missed."

Steven, of Barmston, was a freelance artist who also cared for his 96-year-old father Giuseppe.

The inquest heard it was a sunny day on Friday, August 10, when Steven was riding down the Bridlington road on his black Honda at about 10.40am.

As he overtook cars heading northbound they began to slow down to wait for a black Volkswagen Golf to turn right but Steven failed to see the car and hit the driver's side.

Witnesses described how the impact threw Steven in the air and he rolled over a number of times as his bike skidded along the road.

The female driver of the Volkswagen, who has held a driving licence for more than 40 years, told the inquest she gripped the steering wheel in fear and began to sob.

She said: "I indicated right and checked my mirrors – I didn't see or hear the motorbike coming.

"I was taking my mother-in-law out for the day and she was sat in the back.

"The next thing I knew the bike had hit my car. I wasn't moving and I could see the rider rolling over.

"I was just screaming and my sister-in-law got out of the car and rang an ambulance. I can remember someone opening my door and turning off the ignition and I just cried at the roadside."

She told Steven's family: "I'm really sorry all of this has happened."

Dr Justin Cooke, a consultant histopathologist at Hull Royal Infirmary, carried out a post mortem and said Steven died of pneumonia and a pulmonary embolism after suffering injuries in the crash.

PC Ian Clark, collision investigator, said part of the road was in a poor state and some of it has been brought up to standard since the crash.

He said: "Steven simply wasn't paying attention at the time and it was too late."

No arrests were made and coroner Paul Marks recorded a verdict of accidental death.

“You were not at the Inquest, you have chosen one line from the report in the paper and decided to go with it. Yes you are right, Steven should have been aware of what was happening but who can say in all honesty they have not been distracted by one reason or another, car drivers, motor cyclists, pedestrians etc. fortunately, for most they get away with it.Steven didn't sadly for us. I actually find your lack of sympathy appalling,”

“DanDimire he was very aware of the Highway Code, he was an experienced rider, why do you feel the need to be so cruel, you didn't know him and you certainly do not have the right to be so high and mighty. It was an accident, we have accepted this, now please refrain from any more comments, this has been a tragic time for all of his Family and Friends we do NOT need someone pontificating about his riding abilities!”

“He was, obviously, not aware of the Highway Code either

    Rule 167

DO NOT overtake where you might come into conflict with other road users. For example

approaching or at a road junction on either side of the road”

“DanDrimire, Steven was my Brother-in-Law,his accident shocked and saddened us. He was an experienced rider without a flaw on his motorcycling history, on this occasion for whatever reason he was not paying attention and paid for it with his Life, I found your comment ill thought out and assuming. This Man was a much loved Brother,Uncle and Son to his 96 year old Father whom he cared for.
Also Castle Hill Hospital were fantastic, they did everything possible for Steven and we,as a Family have only praise for the Staff there.”

    “beckster07

Calling me names doesn't alter the basic facts I'm afraid. We can now all travel a little more safely. A motorcyclist who isn't paying attention is a danger to everyone else.”
