'Fat clinic' to open for men in Hull
A £500,000 "fat clinic" is set to open in Hull in the new year after it was revealed two thirds of middle-aged men in the city are overweight or obese.
The clinic – backed by Hull City's Premier League stars – will act as the main point of contact for residents to get help to lose weight.
The Fit Fans scheme will be open to all, but will particularly target men aged between 40 and 65.
In this age group, 66.1 per cent of men in the city are obese or overweight.
It means more than 26,500 men could be eligible to take advantage of the one-to-one consultations being offered over the telephone or at the city centre clinic which is likely to be up and running by the end of January.
The project, which aims to reduce obesity-related diseases, increase life expectancy and improve lifestyles and wellbeing, was given the go-ahead by NHS Hull, the city's primary care trust.
The trust already runs several weight management programmes, which 1,380 people annually use. But just ten per cent of those are men.
Public health manager Peter Dawson said: "If these men can be encouraged to adopt a healthier lifestyle, resulting in sustained weight loss, then long term health benefits will be realised by the population of Hull."
Staff who specialise in weight management will offer advice and motivational support to encourage people to follow a healthier lifestyle plan.
A website and community chat-room will be established as part of the programme, which GPs will also be able to refer patients to.
John Davies, football in the community manager at Hull City, said: "We are happy to be associated with it.
"Anything that improves the health and wellbeing of people of Hull is excellent."
The clinic was also welcomed by Anthony Hughes, 51, of east Hull, who lost more than three stone with the help of one of NHS Hull's existing weight management programmes.
He said: "It should make a difference to people. If they sign up for the programme they get help and advice on what to eat and what exercise to take."
Obesity is when a person is carrying too much body fat for their height and gender. Generally, an adult is considered obese if they have a body mass index of 30 or greater.

“Look, there are some people & some generations who are not as lucky as others. If you cast your mind back to just a few generations ago, information on weight issues and healthy eating was based on the weight watchers - only eat cabbage and drink lots of water program, how interesting and fun does that sound?.
Some people have missed out on information which could have helped them be healther, (I am not saying this is the only reason for weight problems, its just one which I have witnessed first hand), for no other reason then they were born into an un-informed generation - a generation which told you Lard and smoking was good for you etc. If your in your mid- thirties now, you are lucky because more than likely, you were provided with a wide range of information at school and then had the option of learning more. Some people didnt have that priveledge and they wouldnt know where to start looking for information and wouldnt know what information to look for, unless they where pointed in the right direction.
Whether the publicity surrounding this new service is good or bad, it dosnt matter, there are people out there who need and want to get help and need to know where they can get it from. The more publicity, good or bad that this new clinic recieves the better, because it will mean that it will reach more people and therefore reach people that would genuinely welcome, the advice of a professional without being charged £5.00 a session to be told how to live by a person who has sat on a one and a half day slimming world or weight watchers course.
This clinic will be full of professional people who will have trained and researched weight and health issues for many years. They will be highly skilled. They will be able to provide good solid factual based information to people who would like to be assisted.
Some people I know, skip meals thinking they will lose weight, it was only a few years ago, I learnt that by skipping meals it means your body will start using up your muscle for energy, how healthy is that!.
This is just one piece of information amongst thousands more pieces of information which can help people understand how the body reacts to food. When you understand the process better you can then start on the right track to handling things better.
Finally, to those negative people out there, thank you for your comments, every body is entitled to thier own opinion, however they mean absolutely nothing to the people that this service is aimed at, therefore, why comment on something which you so obviously don't understand?
And to those positive comments and to the people who are involved with the clinic who have dedicated their lives to research. (Thank you)”

“hey ,confused .com, dont bite (no pun intended) get yerself down to this clinic and see if they can help, unless theres a medical problem , the only reason people are over weight is they take in more calories then they use up, not knowing your situation i wont patronise you, get down there and get them to advise you, i know its hard to shift the lard, but dont give up fella, if its of any help muscle burns more calories so pump a bit of iron, a couple of times a week at the leisure centre at 3 quid a go is within reason isnt it? the more muscle you add the more calories you need just to stay the same , its never an overnight job thats why jan1st to clocks forward is always the busiest times in gyms, then people lose heart stop going and put the pounds back on , set a realistic goal of a couple of stone over a couple of years and stick at it . get an i pod for motivation, not easy not quick but it is achievable. and council gyms have staff who WILL AND CAN HELP SET AND ACHIEVE TARGETS. good luck.”

“It seems that Hull has its fair share of bigots the mail should of thought of a better title for the article and because they didnt it allowed for morons who dont know anything about people who are said to be over weight.
what I want to know is who decides that because someone has a little spare tyre or needs clothes that ar not in small size that they are fat.
Yes I can be deemed as over weight but I didnt eat all of the pies I dont drink 10 plus pints everyday yes I do exicise yes I do try and eat properly but I am not as unlucky as you so called skinny people who are sad and lonely who feel the need to pick on people who know that they could do with some help in losing some weight .
I work yes full time and no I dont get breathless doing my job no I dont sit a a desk all day or do nothing I have an active day doing what I get paid for no I dont go to the gym because I cant afford to no I cant cut back on beer because I dont drink cigs bcause I dont smoke takeaways because I dont eat them or food because my family would go hungry and no they are not in the same boat as me they are on the small size.
So its nice to see that there is help out there to help people who know they have a problem and these are the people who this clinic will help so these people need support no stupid rantings from mindless idiots who have put stupid remarks on this page
like Tubby Lard tubb Fridge Gav Mate on the Sofa and last but not least Glen Quagmire and hey glen if they do pay you why dont you go to Rhode Island then we dont have to read your poison”

“Just privatise the NHS, so at least you'll be looking after number one instead of all the self-inflicted unfit people in this country (smokers, morbidly obese, addicts, etc). If the cost of the NHS was taken away from the tax payer, it would probably still be cheaper to go private and get a better service... what a backwards country this is.”

“lynn hull, the government introduced vat on hot food in the mid 80s, about the same time they decided to ban smoking adverts and start to clamp down on smoking in general, people didnt really think the witch hunt against smokers was without any lateral taxes did they?? the government has only swapped unhealthy lungs and hearts for, well...unhealthy hearts and cancer in general.think, how many takeaways have opened in the last 20 years and how many planning aplications for fast food outlets ever get refused by councils?? the side shows of been seen to get people slim and fit by the authorities is the fore runner to put extra taxes on fast food , to make up the lost ciggie tax, then when the take aways start closing , it will be put on unhealthy options in supermarkets etc etc etc, do people really think the government are sincere about extending life expectancy?? do people really think the government wants joe public living on average to 80 or 90 claiming pensions and draining the nhs?? if anyone does, then time to get real. taxed to death ..literally.”
