ST Stephen's shopping centre's ground floor will be fully let in April after two new tenants were signed.

The latest additions at the Ferensway centre include a toy retailer and Hull's first 24 hour gym.

It means the main retail floor of St Stephen's will be fully let for the first time since the landmark development opened in 2007.

One of the new tenants is The Entertainer – the UK's largest independent toy retailer – which is set to open in a 4,000sq ft shop unit, located between Argos and TK Maxx, around Easter.

In another coup, a deal has been negotiated with Fit24, which has taken a 15,000sq ft outlet, set to open by April.

Centre manager Jim Harris said securing the new tenants was testimony to hard work and strong footfall figures at St Stephen's – with just under nine million people passing through the development last year, seven per cent up on 2008.

He said: "These deals principally came out of the success we had in the autumn.

"Tenants like to have successful schemes in successful cities and 2009 has been a fantastic year for the city and a strong year for St Stephen's.

"When the scheme opened there were 12 units let, including Tesco, but now the ground floor is completely full, which is fantastic."

He added: "You don't get anything for nothing and we have worked very hard to attract tenants."

The two new tenants come only three weeks after the Mail exclusively revealed fashion store Cult Clothing, whose Superdry brand boasts celebrity fans including David Beckham, is set to open at St Stephen's after Easter.

    “Emma, Goole
It's not the parking ; it's the unlikely shops. So many "fashion" outlets for a city that is bottom of the table for income and education. Seems a recipe for decline blamed on the people on Hull for not supporting the "big idea".
Well we erl ger ter Tescur; innit?

Those looking to Hull to lead the UK out of recession will have their bones turn grey before anything stirs.”

    “Emma,
you must reside in an alternative dimension. Hull is so well served with parking compared to other major cities. I t's bursting at the seams with council and privately run parking spots.”

“Emma, Goole - this is a very positive story - yet more jobs for Hull, and more importantly, more shops for the public. Yet, you, choose to make your negative comments around the availability of parking in Hull city centre. However, coming from Goole, you are on the doorstep of a railway system that drops you right off next to the St Stephens shopping centre!! What more do you want? You moan like all typical car drivers who would drive their car through the front door of the shop if they could.”

“I don't like the way that people in Hull all too often put a negative spin on a good news story. Two new tenants to SS (and the city) - it has to be good news doesn't it? It means more jobs available to Hull people.”

“A 24 hour gym, and will it be an extortionate price to join ? There are people in Hull who would join a gym if it was not for the stupid high prices you have to pay.i was a member of the Octagon gym until the powers that be closed it down and that was lottery funded. So come on give us some where to exercise without feeling as if we have just been robbed!!!”

“st stephens has been good for hull in my opinion, just think it could do with a nice green area outside the front entrance, rather than more paving, covered in chewing gum, also whats that empty kiosk at the front, that looks like a mini prison, who on earth designed that monstrosity, hull has a massive litter and graffiti problem all over the place, not just on clive sullivan way,any visitor driving into hull on the clive sullivan way, with all the litter and weeds must give a terrible first impression.”

“Infact, there are more then 2 multi storeys in Hull, Pryme Street, George Street, Market place, as well as Princes Quay and St St. Stephens, and that's not mentioning Tesco's vast free car park. Also, old LA's land IS going to be a temporary car park too as reported a few weeks back. I visited Liverpool One a few weeks back and parking cost a fortune compared to Hull. I think it's actually quite good value to park in Hull City Centre!”

“Out of town retail is a fact of life, without it there would be total and utter chaos in the cetre, it would not cope, where would you build spuermarkets the size of asda on KIngswood in the cuty centre. It is supermarkets like these that allow folk to avoid the city centre, as i say the city centre would not cope but for all these out of town retail parks. And Hull does not lack buses, far from it, it lacks public willing to use them, Your definitely not from Hull if you think there are no buses emma. As i say, bone idle folk that want car parks within 100 metres of everything.”

“Phil do you work for town planning, 2 multi stories are not enough and only one park and ride. Hull's plan was to encourage city centre shopping and discourage out of town retail, they forgot out of town shopping centres all have adequate free safe car parking, a major flaw in their policy was to neglect car parking and public transport, why can't people realise this error and put it right, raise your game.”
