Chairman of EYMS Peter Shipp said: "This scheme should not cost us too much and we are keen to get involved in something that encourages more people to use buses.

"We are one of just a few independent bus companies involved.

"Unemployment is a big issue in Hull and getting to interviews and places of work is a problem.

"If we can help in any small way, then it has to be good.

"If more people use the buses then, when they do find work, they may carry on using them."

Greener Journeys has forged a deal with the UK's leading bus companies to enable jobseekers, especially the young, to use their routes free of charge for a month.

Bus travel is the most popular mode of transport used by Britain's commuters, with 5.2 billion bus journeys taking place in the UK each year.

The scheme will provide free travel in January for those who have been unemployed for between three months and one year.

Adam Fowler, of the Hull and Humber Environment Forum, has welcomed the scheme.

He said: "There is a good bus network in Hull and the East Riding and a higher percentage of people use buses here than nationally.

"Both Hull and East Riding councils are very aware of the barriers to unemployment. This will make the job hunt just that little bit easier.

"Public transport can be a key issue for those seeking work. This scheme has to be welcomed.

"Unlike some areas, people can get almost anywhere in Hull and the surrounding area by bus so it could benefit a lot of people."

It is not clear exactly how many people in the region will benefit but Hull has some of the highest rates of unemployment in the country. There are 8.3 per cent of the population claiming jobseekers' allowance in Hull. This is more than double the national average of 3.8 per cent.

Claire Haigh, chief executive of Greener Journeys, said: "This scheme will help get people on the move and into work or training opportunities.

"In difficult economic times, this new scheme will provide a helpful start to the new year, enabling job hunters to travel around more easily in search of employment, to job interviews with prospective employers, and to training courses which will help them find work."

Transport Minister Norman Baker said: "Good bus services play a huge role in boosting economic growth as they help people to access employment and training.

"This move will benefit the industry as well as job seekers as young people are not only a key section of the market, they are also the future of the local bus industry."

“The scheme is for those that have been unemployed for between 3 months and a year, so the long-term unemployed - including benefit scroungers - won't be eligible.

I assume the bus passes will be withdrawn after the person has been unemployed for a year, but will there be a mechanism for cancelling them if the person gets a job before this?”

“Thanks Mildred, to those of you out of work - a little tip - register with an employment agency (or several) there are hidden jobs out there which are never advertised and the agencies can do a good job filtering out the wheat from the chaff. I know I deal with them.

Yes I've been unemployed three times in my life - never ever give up, keep trying.

I'm now in manufacturing as a manager and I have absolutely no issues getting the same person's CV from three or more agencies, so give them a go - you have nothing to lose.

Just be open and honest and be yourself - never ever try to emulate somebody else, never ever be tempted to forge qualifications or CVs - we do check up and we all have friends and contacts in other organisations who we can contact to find out the truth.

    Good luck!”

“Any scheme that can encourage people into work, has to be good,I'm sure many of the lazy uninterested long term unemployed will abuse the free travel, while the state pays there rent, council tax and benefit to do nothing, many will never be encouraged to work.
also still think o.a.p,s should contribute towards there free bus travel fares, may be 30% of the fare.”

“Why between three months and one year?

What about all those who just lost their jobs at local companies and now need to find more jobs, they are the most likely people genuinely looking for work and needing the extra help as they've suddenly got no money coming in, as opposed to those out of work for a year and most likely their entire life.”

“Having experienced unemployment myself I completely sympathise with the GENUINE unemployed, not everyone who is out of work is a layabout shirker, try looking people ex BAE, Comet, the Caravan Industry etc in the face and say that. There are THOUSANDS of good people out of work, they deserve every bit of help they can get - one day it could be YOU.

However as for the 'lifetime on benefits lazy can't be ****d unemployable scroats' who give the genuine unemployed a bad name yes they will take the p*ss and grab a free ride to their next drug deal or whatever, the real problem is sorting out the wheat from the chaff, and the political elite have stopped all forms of discipline as it is 'discriminatory'. You need to be discriminatory if you live in the real world not cloud cuckoo left wing liberal well paid out of the way academia or some other cosy middle calls job with no hassle.”

“Are all those anti unemployed troll, like Dave-Navarro suggesting all those who have lost their jobs in the caravan industry, Brough, Comet, the buildding trade et al all shirkers.

Typical of your thoughts and attitude to those who nare trying.
I find those who have little sympathy for the unemployed and think they have a life of RILEY, HAVE NEVER HAD TO SUFFER THE SAME.
WHEN THEY DO BECOME UNEMPLOYEED THEY SCREAM THAT THEY HAVE BEEN LET DOWN BY THE GOVERNMENT AND OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT SHIRKERS, ITS THE OTHERS”
