The festival stretches on into the night, when Martha Reeves will headline on the Pier Stage, but everyone was enjoying the sunshine this afternoon.

Lizzie Porter, of west Hull, who visited with her daughter Mabel, said: "The Freedom Festival is my favourite event in Hull and we go every year. There is always something a bit different and there is always a great mix of things to do."

While family events were centred around Queen's Gardens, this year there are performances in the specially-erected Teatro Spiegeltent, as well as live music everywhere from the E20 Yellow Bus stage on Wellington Street to Fruit on Humber Street.

Crowds also enjoyed a number of dance performances.

Chris Snell, of west Hull, has been to the festival every day. He said: "We have loved the mix of family stuff and more grown up entertainment. The street bars and arty bits around Humber Street were amazing and there was a fantastic atmosphere without even a hint of trouble. It makes Hull feel like a centre of culture and I am really proud to live here."
