BEVERLEY and East Riding pairing Neil Burnley and David Jackson were in fine form for the second week in succession as they emerged victorious in the latest Hull and District Golfing Association event.

Having lost on a back-nine countback last week, Burnley and Jackson took a one-stroke win when playing on their home course, finishing with an excellent seven-under-par score of 62.

Standing on level par after 10 holes, Burnley (+1) and Jackson (5) finished by recording an extremely impressive seven birdies in a row, before a par on the 18th.

Obviously their knowledge of course and how it plays proved the decider, particularly as Burnley is one of the green staff at Beverley and Jackson is a green keeper at Hessle.

One stroke adrift of the winners on 63 were Ron Short (8) and Paul Davy (10) from Ganstead Park.

Davy had been in the winning pair the week before at Hainsworth Park.

A slide rule was necessary to identify the minor placings with seven pairings finishing on 64.

In third place were Jeff Turner (12) and Simon Withill (13) Ganstead Park, fourth were Tony Wilkinson (15) and Jeff Jones (18) Springhead Park, Matt Moore (6) and Paul Naylor (10) from Springhead Park. In the fifth and final prize slot were Rex Nurse (15) and Martin George (17) from Withernsea.

George is Withernsea's centenary captain.

Alex Ashby, of Beverley and ER, took the professional prize.

With only a maximum three events remaining (Hornsea, Hull and the re-scheduled Withernsea event), the competition for the Victor Hurdle Cup could not be tighter.

Ganstead Park and Hessle are neck and neck, while Springhead Park trail by three shots with Beverley and ER a shot further back.

The remaining clubs are probably now out of the running.

AT Flamborough Head, 156 golfers played in excellent conditions in the East Riding Alliance .

It was the Malton & Norton pairing of assistant professional Fraser Kelley and his regular amateur partner Brian Jacques (8), who finished with 61 – 10 under par – to win the event.

Having placed in four of the previous seven Alliance meetings already this season, this was just reward for the pairing's persistence.

However, having won an Alliance they must go their separate ways, because Alliance rules stipulate a winning pair cannot play again as a pair in the rest of the season.

Kelley had birdies on holes 3, 8, 12, 15, 16 and 18 whilst Jacques was five under par nett on the seven holes on which he counted.

Two strokes adrift of the winners on 63 were the Sutton Park pairing of Steve Grouwstra (4) and Ian Bottomley (12) and the York Golf Club duo of Tony Crompton (8) and Phil Moore (10).

Joint fourth place was shared by Hornsea's Marke Cooke (9) and Stuart Branton (9), Driffield's Chris Johnson (Ass/Pro) and Nick Bristowe (5), Ganton's Mark Bentley (2) and John Harrison (6) and the Hessle father and son pairing of Andy and Paul Lockwood (both off a handicap of one) with a score of 64.

With only one round remaining Malton & Norton have all-but sealed the race for the Mail's Championship Bowl, with Heworth their nearest challengers on 940.

The final round is at Hornsea on March 18 when, barring a catastrophe Malton & Norton, the current holders, should be able to savour the moment.
