23-storey Hull tower block gets go-ahead
Plans for a major new development in Hull city centre were given the go-ahead by councillors this afternoon.
The £100m scheme includes what will be the tallest residential building in the area in the shape of a 23-storey tower block.
New flats, student accommodation, a hotel and casino and new restaurants are all earmarked on the site of the derelict Clarence Mill complex next to Drypool Bridge.
The post-war mill buildings will be demolished to make way for the new development being spearheaded by the North Ferriby based Manor Property group.

“Well, well. One wonders when all this talk of developing Hull will stop. The most valid point made here in my opinion is the one that should make developers think twice: there's no bloody money in Hull. We all remember the hype of St. Stephens, and now we can see the abysmal truth: its architecturally tepid, contains nothing but corporate chain stores (most of which we already had prior to its opening) and much of its retail space is still unoccupied! Then there's Next shutting down in Victoria Square, Barclay's occupying that space and leaving their old branch at Paragon Square empty. This is essentially a game of musical chairs for the fat-cat corporate retailers and bankers. It seems the approach is simply to throw cash at a problem (that being poverty) and thinking that somehow, miraculously, we will all be better off. Of course, such business-led growth will by definition mostly benefit the businesses - since none are locally-owned, capital flight will occur, leaving Hull residents as serfs on their own land. The issue of a casino is irrelevant- most people in Hull can't afford any frivolities at the moment, whether its high-street clothing or going to Vegas by the mud flat.
We need to wise up - the retail sector is going down the pan very quickly, the entire global economy is in recession - if the plan is simply to plow ahead with development regardless of future costs, I'd much prefer that private cash was funnelled into something a bit more useful and in demand for the people of Hull than a casino or another shopping centre.”

“I'm with concerned. If this town gets like Shefield, Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham and not for the shopping purpose i'm leaving.
Who are we building student flats, restaurants and casino's for the foreigners? Haven't we got two casino's already? Have we got a serious gambling addiction in Hull then that i'm not aware of?
APPARENTLT ACORDING TO THE COUNCIL THERE IS A LACK OF HOUSES IN HULL FOR THE LOCAL PEOPLE, DO THE WHOLE OF HULL WHO NEED RENTED ACCOMODATION HAVE TO CRAM ONTO NEW HOUSING ON ORCHARD PARK THEN?, I SEE NO OTHERS BEING BUILT!!!!!!!”

“I'll say it since neither the council nor the majority of Hull dwellers seem to have manners, (only opinions) THANY YOU you to the brave developer for investing in Hull. God knows the city needs it. Quite frankly anyone willing to take on the negativity of Hull Council deserves congratulating. What makes me laugh is that by and large the place is a dump, and yet any serious offers to improve currently unused or derelict areas are treated with contempt. Everyone's so busy to say we don't want this and that we don't want that, wake up and smell the coffee or else put your money where your mouth is. What does Hull Forward actually do? Does any one know?”

“I didn't say all of the younger generation, i said most. I'm sure Manor group would not pump £100 million into a scheme that they didn't think was going to be a success.. The only reason there isn't much demand for apartments in the Ferensway area at the moment is because of the empty buildings such as La's and Circus Circus and an unfinished Theatre, once these are redeveloped there will be more demand, although its not going to happen overnight!”
