Hull's existing memorial to lost fishermen could be moved because of the "terrible state" it is in.

Benevolent group The Royal Antediluvian Order Of Buffaloes (RAOB) has criticised the site at the Bullnose, on St Andrew's Dock, west Hull.

Chairman Steve Ward said it is creating a health and safety risk to people visiting the memorial plinth and plaque.

He wants Mail readers to suggest possible new locations for the memorial.

The group wants the memorial to be in place in a new location before their annual service to remember lost fishermen, which will be held on July 4.

Mr Ward said: "When we held the tribute to lost seafarers last year, we noticed the terrible state that the place was in.

"We had to clean it up with our own brushes and brooms before the service.

"We feel it now poses a health and safety risk and want to temporarily move it to another site, ideally keeping it on St Andrew's Dock.

"It would be brilliant if people could suggest any ideas they have for a new location."

The RAOB also raised money for the monument on the Boulevard, which was unveiled in 1906.

It is in memory of the trawlermen who lost their lives in the Dogger Bank tragedy of 1904.

As previously reported in the Mail, plans for another memorial to thousands of the city's lost fishermen are gathering pace.

Negotiations are ongoing between fishing heritage group Stand and a landowner on the dock to secure a site for a permanent memorial.

The group recently announced they were looking for an alternative site because of the need for the Bullnose to be cleaned up.

Alex Codd, Hull City Council's city planning manager, said a temporary site for the RAOB memorial would need to conform to planning rules.

"Any potential locations will need to be determined if they are suitable from a planning perspective," he said.

“The Council should slip Paloma the couple of hundred grand they intend to spend on plassie toads for sly toad Larkin.
Bet things would gather pace then, plus the Council may just show they are still in touch with what most people want.”

“Well I think Pete, Hull has a good place in mind ! It should be put in a place for all to see,and easy to visit. But why have we had to wait all these years for a memorial ? Hull was known world wide for its fishing vessels ,thousands of hard working men died in terrible conditions for little reward. Give THEM a fitting memorial BEFORE spending money on arty farty poets.”

“Paloma land still owns this area of st. andrews dock I think. They had big plans for redevelopment, just like Boothferry Park. I guess its the councils job to make them act?”

“"creating a health and safety risk to people visiting the memorial plinth and plaque."
-well then the H&S issue needs sorting out, plaque or no plaque. The Seafish building had been boarded properly and the ground and first floor for a while now, so this has massively reduced debris (eg broken windows) on the bull nose, What is the H&S issue now? if it still relates to the building hte building owners should be made to sort that out.”

“I want it near all the other places of rememberance on or near Ferensway and Jameson street for all to see everyday perhaps by Hammonds or alongside the Boar war memorial as my grandad died in a trawler hunting mines.”

“It needs to be somewhere on the dock or on Hessle Road. Nowhere else seems appropriate.”
