HMV in crisis talks as administrators are lined up
RETAILER HMV is expected to go into administration tomorrow morning, putting yet more jobs in the city under threat.
Directors at the company, which has a store in Whitefriargate, met earlier today to discuss its future amid growing concerns it could become the latest big-name high street chain to succumb to the flat-lining economy.
The move would put more than 4,000 jobs at risk, just days after the camera retailer Jessops announced its demise, with the closure of nearly 200 shops and the loss of almost 2,000 jobs.

“All those people who picked up a CD/DVD on a market stall at a bargain price can now see the result of their actions”

“Numerous things have contributed to its demise, but the major one being online sales, when all the other online digital retailers where taking over HMV stood still. Whoever was in charge at the time needs their head testing who wouldnt want to make sales while they sleep, a good gimmick would have been to operate like online games giant Steam. While people buy the product a dvd/cd a digital record is kept so they can download it again when ever they want throughout their lifetime, as dvd/cd all have a shelf life before the data starts to degrade.”

“Sad to hear but unfortunately expected. With all the music downloads they really didn't stand much of a chance. They could have been a good base for purchasing mobile phones/ipods etc but didn't take up the opportunity under their noses. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.......”

“Wow, I took something back there yesterday and nearly took a gift voucher. Hope they honour my refund!! Was going to exchange for Total Recall but when it was at £14.99 when Asda sell it for £10.00 is it any wonder they are in trouble!!
Another retail high street chain in trouble. Where will it end. I guess online companies who don't pay any tax in this country could be partly to blame.”

“I am actually quite surprised by this as whenever I go in the place is so busy. Wonder what the heck it takes to keep a business going these days?”

“Always a very expensive store unfortunately, bound to fall foul of less expensive internet shopping. A sad loss if it goes though,it does have a good selection of items. Just pricey.”

“The writing has been on the wall for a long time now, so not really a surprise. But still not good news for the people who work there.”
