HULL City's assistant manager Brian Horton believes Jozy Altidore can become a key player in the fight against relegation battle after the striker scored his first Premier League goal.

The United States international netted in the first half of yesterday's 2-1 victory over Manchester City and caused problems for the visiting defence throughout the match at the KC Stadium.

Altidore joined City on-loan from Villarreal in August, but has taken time to make an impression and has also had off-the-field trauma to deal with.

The 20-year-old's parents come from Haiti and he has family in the country who were affected by last month's devastating earthquake.

He was granted compassionate leave and missed Hull's draw with Tottenham on January 16 but put in arguably his best performance for the Tigers yesterday, capped by his goal, which he celebrated by kissing a wristband bearing the Haitian flag.

Horton said: "He needed that. His displays have been good but to get his first league goal is just what he wanted and he was a handful all round.

"He's a young lad and we've probably heaped a lot on him but he's shown glimpses of what people have bought him for. He's got pace, he's got quite a lot of things going for him. We're just pleased we spotted the opportunity to bring him here.

"He's had a lot to contend with with his family. You don't understand those things until it's happened to yourself; for a 20-year-old boy in a different country having to cope with all that, but he's shown he's got ability, that's the main thing for us."

“Fimo NY; Agree with your comments especially the Jan. window - but the past is just that... Jozy has great commercial possibilities for the Tigers, so a deal is Important! Don't know if the fee can be reduced or payments staged but an attempt to sign looks beneficial. Still Pompey & WHU seem to have got away without paying at all for some of their players!!”

“Hopefully the performances against Chelsea and Man City can be once again delivered against Blackburn? We seem to struggle always against the lesser teams.Although a better performance by McShane and Fagan on Saturday the right hand side seems to a lot weaker than the left and would play Zayatte at right back.”

“the high performance of jozy Altidore refers to :
the fair competetion on striker position .
when more available competent subs. , each player will try to hold his chance and prove himself.
i hope the 4-4-2 formation continue vs blackburn ,with
Altidore and zaki from the begining , which will aterrific dual.”

“Great play and result by the team. If we stay up then we shoudl buy Altidore. I'm not sure we need Turner anymore: I think Mouyokolo and Gardner are a brilliant first choice pairing with Copper and Zayette as back up we are very strong in central defence. Myhill is improving all the time, but we may need to make the RB and LB positions more competitive. IF we stay up we need to look at realeasing the "yesterday men" such as Marney et al. With JVoH and Altidore tied to contracts we can then look at getting one more loan gem to polish and purchase up front and look at a youngster as 4th striker. Olofinjana, Boateng (if he continues in the current form), Cairney, Hunt, Bullard (if fit) gives us a good core midfield (I'd keep Fagan too). The future is starting to look brighter. We can play good football and be a decent topflight side.”

“6 mill always sounds like a lot. However, if we purchase before the World Cup, then the World Cup will pay a significant amount, which should take the cost down a few hundred thousand.

Also, with the way he is progressing, 6 mill looks like a decent deal should we want to trade him off in the future.

I would think it is a almost a certainty that Altidore will get an EPL contract next year. The main thing to consider is - do we think we can get someone better, for less? and do we have the defence that can shut Altidore down?”

“One negative of Altidore's game: he NEVER heads the ball!”

“ever since the bolton home game he has proved what he can do. a real rough diamond thats getting more polished game by game. the option to take him on a full time contract should be taken in the summer and before the world cup starts. the only good thing PD did last august. imo. ots has to be known that all PL et an extra 25% on the tv money. thats 8.75 million(44 million in total next season) so city should have no problems taking up the first option PD agreed with villereal. he is such a powerhouse striker. a centre halfs nightmare. well played jozy. keep it going. UTT

super bowl on a break again.”

“G'Day Ron from a rather colder Northern Hemisphere. While I agree that the relationship between PB and AP is somewhat more businesslike than the one he enjoyed with Paul Duffen he also appears to have a clear directive on what the Chairman expects him to do. I don't believe that PB is necessarily a bad man manager. When AP took control again he would have made his decision to keep Brown in the job after he had fully assessed what was going on at the club and that should have included feedback from the team and other staff. Granted he has made mistakes the public dressing down last season at Eastlands for example and he has had fallouts with the likes of Cousin, Folan etc but you will always get that where footballers are concerned where ego's play a big part, an area that brownie himself has been guilty of but with the help of AP he now seems to be channeling this enthusiasm towards the team. We have all witnessed a big improvement over the last few games which shows a team spirit and togetherness that only the manager and his backroom staff team can bring to the fore. PB has at times been tactically inept but as you say he is still learning and I'm a big believer that Brian Horton is a good influence on him in this respect as others will be also. The older pro's have also come out on a regular basis and supported the manager when there has been talk of unrest and PB has not waivered in his commitment to keeping City in the Premiership (publically distancing himself from the Bolton job recently when he had a chance to jump ship). Hopefully the influence that AP has brought to the club is now beginning to take effect but let's remember one man does not make a team its all down to a team effort at the end of the day.”

“I can see us getting more points than last season. I've broke the season down into 5 game sequences, in games 1-5 and 6-10 we got less points than last season but in games 11-15, 16-20 and 21-25 we got more than last season. It was only our good start that kept us up last year. We've had our bad run, now as long as we can keep picking points up from here on in, we should be fine. Premier league money is going up 25% next year so if we stay up, we should get £43M. That should allow us to buy Altidore and keep other players on. We must get Cairney tied down to a long contract too, players like him are the long term future of our club.”
