STANLEY Gene will take his first step towards coaching his national side after finishing his playing career at Hull KR.

Rovers have offered the 35-year-old an ambassador's role at Craven Park and the opportunity to help on the coaching staff, but the Papua New Guinea star is still weighing up his options.

Championship side Featherstone are interested in signing the utility player on a player/coach role and Gene hinted his decision could be sorted out within the next few days.

Whether it's Featherstone or Rovers, Gene's ultimate goal now is to coach Papua New Guinea, whom he has represented in three World Cups.

"My dream is to coach my country," Gene said.

"It would be great if I can get into coaching either here or at Featherstone.

"If I do go there, it won't be full time coaching so I'll be looking to learn my trade wherever I am.

"Nothing has been signed or sealed so we'll wait and see what happens in a couple of days.

"Rovers have offered me an ambassador role on game days and also a bit of coaching.

"I will sit down with the club and discuss things which have to be right for me."

Hull Kingston Rovers V Wigan Warriors
    Preliminary Semi-Final 2

    W 16 - 30
Wigan Warriors progressed through into the last four of the Play-Offs and Sunday¿s Club Call with a well deserved and hard fought 16-30 win at Hull KR on Saturday night.

The Warriors will travel to Leeds or St Helens next weekend and are 80 minutes away from a Grand Final spot once more. Their opponents will depend on Leeds decision to face either Wigan or Catalans with the other side to travel to Saints.

The Warriors were winning 18-0 at half time, thanks to tries from Carmont, Paleaaesina and Richards before Rovers hit back to score 16 points to bring them within two points. Full credit to Wigan, with Rovers on a roll the visitors grabbed an important try from Martin Gleeson with just over an hour gone and with Pat Richards goal it opened up an important 8 point lead. The Wigan win was completed as Gleeson grabbed his second try of the night late on.

Wigan Warriors named the same 17 that defeated Castleford Tigers at the DW Stadium last Sunday. Rovers welcomed back Shaun Briscoe, Jake Webster, Ben Galea and Scott Murrell, all four missed the loss at Leeds Rhinos.

Hull KR were awarded a penalty after 7 minutes for interference, Michael Dobson completely miss hit his attempted conversion from 20 metres out.

At the other Wigan wasted a good position with a forward pass from Riddell to Coley as the Warriors pressed just a few metres from the Robins try line.

It was Wigan who opened the scoring on 16 minutes, quick hands to the left as the Rovers defence moved up quickly allowed George Carmont through the gap for the games first try out wide. Richards missed the extras 0-4.

On 22 minutes Wigan extended their lead through a Richards penalty, 0-6

With ten minutes of the half left Paleaaesina extended Wigans lead, having been held over the line moments before Brian Noble¿s men won another six tackles and then a penalty and the big prop powered his way over from close range to the delight of a large following of Warriors fans behind the try line. Richards struck the conversion to open up a 0-12 lead.

Richards tried an ambitious long range penalty from just inside his own half, it had the height but the direction was just wide with 37 minutes on the clock.

Wigan were on a roll and grabbed their third try as the half drew to a close. Leuluai, O¿Loughlin out to Pat Richards who still had work to do against two Rovers defenders in the left hand corner. Richards added a great goal to open up an 0-18 lead and that¿s the way it stayed until the interval.

The home side needed the first points of the second half and they got it within three minutes. Jake Webster with a break down the right but it was Kris Welham on the left who was the Rovers try scorer. The goal was missed by Michael Dobson, 4-18.

Harrison Hansen was forced off with an injury on 50 minutes.

On 56 minutes Hull KR were right back in it, Rovers gaining possession from a knock on midfield. The home side switched from right to left and winger Peter Fox squeezed in at the corner. Dobson hit the conversion 10-18.

The tide was turning and a high tackle by Riddell sent Rovers up field once more, this time it was sub Chaz I¿Anson who stretched over for Hull KR¿s third try on 61 minutes. Dobson converted to bring Rovers within two points, 16-18.

Wigan were in desperate need of a try and they got it, Martin Gleeson managing to get the ball down despite a desperate attempt by Briscoe to stop him, the try given by the video referee. Richards hit a simple goal to give the visitors a 16-24 advantage with 64 minutes gone

Wigan made fully sure late on as Martin Gleeson grabbed his second try in the dying seconds and Richards goal made it 16-30.

A fabulous win and yet again Brian Noble and his side have done the business at the crucial business end of the season.
