BURGLARIES have reduced in Beverley and Driffield after police campaigns warned residents that 40 per cent of offences were happening as a result of doors and windows being left open.

Police in Beverley and in other parts of the East Riding woke residents whose homes were insecure and at risk of burglary.

Officers also left crime prevention leaflets – known as 'hairy hands' because of their distinctive shape – to let residents know that had a burglar spotted the opportunity, they could have been a victim.

The move was welcomed by neighbourhood watch groups who warned residents must take responsibility for their property and not leave crime prevention to the police.
