Haltemprice Leisure Centre to get £6m makeover including doctor's surgery and library
AMBITIOUS £6m plans to update Haltemprice Leisure Centre will also see other services brought under the same roof, including a GP surgery and library.
The leisure centre, which is the busiest in the East Riding, is set to be upgraded and extended to make it fit for the demands of its 1.1 million annual visitors.

Planning for the future: From left, Councillor Richard Burton, Tony Clarkson, senior facility manager at Haltemprice Leisure Centre, Council Leader Councillor Stephen Parnaby, Kevin Hadfield, leisure service manager, and Darren Stevens, head of culture and information.
Under council plans, other local services, including Anlaby Library, Anlaby Customer Service Centre and a doctor's surgery, would also be relocated to the Springfield Way site.
East Riding Council Leader Councillor Stephen Parnaby said: "The council realises the value our residents place on having access to high- quality leisure facilities, libraries and customer service provision.

"The plans for the refurbishment of Haltemprice Leisure Centre highlight this authority's commitment to providing these services now and in the future.
"We had more than 1.1 million visitors to Haltemprice Leisure Centre in 2011-12, which made it the most well-used leisure centre in the East Riding and the refurbishment would put it at the forefront of leisure facilities in the UK."
The plans would see the pool and sports halls renovated, the tone zone fitness suite extended, a new café installed and the outdoor pitches refurbished.
Additional parking spaces would also be added at the site.
The work, which is expected to start next spring, would be completed in 2014, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the centre's opening by Sir Roger Bannister.
Cllr Parnaby said: "The scheme is subject to the normal planning process and, if granted, would see works start on site in spring 2013.
"These will be phased to minimise disruption as much as possible and will take about 20 months to complete, with the final element of the works completed in autumn 2014."
Locating a GP surgery at Haltemprice Leisure Centre would strengthen the link between keeping active through leisure activities and health, according to the council.
Improvements are also designed to improve energy efficiency at the 38-year-old centre. The plans would allow Anlaby Library to more than quadruple its opening hours from the current 22 per week, as well as provide up-to-date amenities, including web access and self-service machines.
The council will also be seeking permission to merge the library and customer service provision in both Hessle and Withernsea.

“About 10 years too late but better late than never. The outdoor pitches should be secure and not a "chav" attraction when it gets dark.”

“As far as the Community Service Centre is concerned, surely it would be better left where it is so that shoppers on foot can access it. It's quite a trek from the centre of Anlaby to the sports centre.”

“I would welcome an upgrade to the mens changing facilities nearest the halls, especially the showers (mixed in with the toilets) it really is unacceptable in its lack of cleanliness.”

“Great news and long overdue, just hope they add "enough" extra car park spaces because it really is a joke trying to park there. Maybe they'll open up the massive swathe of grass to the front of the centre, be nice to see the plans on the Haltemprice web site.”
