Hessle Road could become Hull's 'green street'
SHOP fronts along Hessle Road could be renovated to make them more energy efficient.
Chairman of the Hessle Road Traders' Association Donna Finn is seeking funding to replace old windows with double glazing to keep the heat in and make it a green street.

She has the backing of Hull City Council, which is helping the association find funding streams to tap into.
Mrs Finn is hoping the street can benefit from a drive to make Hull a forerunner in the green revolution.

Just last week, one of the largest European Regional Development Fund grants ever given to a single project was handed over the Hull Energy Works for a new £150m biomass plant.
Mrs Finn, who runs hair salon Female Ego, said: "This idea is about keeping Hull green and doing something for Hessle Road at the same time.
"Hull is looking to lead the way in this and Hessle Road is one of its most famous roads.
"What we are looking to do is to have the old shop windows in Hessle Road replaced with double glazing.
"I need traders to let me know if they want to be involved in this.
"The heat escapes easily through these old windows and wastes a lot of energy.
"But stores have to keep the premises warm for their staff."

But Mrs Finn also wants to ensure the street is not changed too much.
She said: "We want to keep Hessle Road traditional.
"This won't just be some free-for-all to get new doors and windows but a genuine scheme to make the entire street greener.
"At our recent traders' association meeting, there was a lot of support for it.
"But we will need about 25 per cent of the traders to get on board if we are to make it work.
"The one issue is that many shops rent, so we would need to track down the landlords to get their support."
Owner of Hartley's Newsagents John Hartley has given the idea his backing.
He said: "If we can get some funding then it would be great.
"It would be very beneficial to all the shopkeepers.
"We pay a lot to keep the shop warm and there is no central heating.
"The heat goes straight out through the windows."
Hull City Council has offered to support the idea and help Mrs Finn find possible funding streams.
Martin Budd, strategic adviser for environment and climate, said: "I am happy to meet the traders to discuss how they can access the Green Deal: energy saving for their business.
"This means they can make energy-saving improvements without paying all the costs up front and instead in instalments through their electricity bills.
"As well as this, we can talk about low-cost small steps that will also save money and conserve energy over time."

“Does anyone remember the slang word for money. Think they still use it in America. It's called greenbacks. The colour of money where lots of it is generated by companies now wanting us all to go 'green'. Don't get me wrong. I am all for saving money and cutting fuel bills but working in construction every time I see the word green I know it costs more to install. Photovoltaic roof systems to heat water, air source heat pumps to heat water and radiators, super efficient air conditioning units which don't take into account the extortionate cost of electricity but work with building regs due to their efficiency. Even glass is now argon filled as standard, again costing more at the outset. Rigid insulation costs an absolute fortune compared to glass rolls. Isn't it a shame that going green doesn't cost less at the outset.
Instead of funding or part funding coming from public funds why not approach local glazing companies to give support and ask them to ask the same from either Pilkingtons or Saint Gobain who are the 2 main suppliers of glass to the double glazing industry.”

I want double glazing for my house, back and front, and a new roof, so my road can be greener.
