Westella & Willerby Res 0 Hessle Rangers 5

Hessle thoroughly deserved their 5-0 victory in this opening fixture of the season.

They gave debuts to four new signings, who all contributed to a good team performance.

Hessle started the match well; playing with the wind behind them they controlled most of the possession and created all the chances, but were spurned by some wayward finishing.

Westella were restricted to one effort which came from a free kick.

Hessle's front pair of Sherwood and Bird was looking dangerous, but on too many occasions the final ball through was just too strong with the wind carrying the ball through to the keeper.

Westella started the second half the brighter, nearly punishing some sloppy passing from Hessle defensive unit which required a timely intervention from the sprightly R. Downing.

This seemed to wake Hessle up, because from that tackle in the 50th minute, Hessle took control.

Hessle's midfield of Briggs and Gardiner reasserted their authority and totally dominated.

It was from a Briggs free kick that Gardiner opened the scoring with a deft header in the 55th minute.

Hessle playing with confidence were able to create chance after chance.

The difference this half was the ball holding up in the breeze and Hessle's nimble strikers running onto the endless supply of ball and causing problems for Westella's defence.

Hessle increased their lead when D. Bird scored two goals in two minutes to cap a fine personal debut.

Hessle were looking by far the fitter team and were fluent with their passing which resulted in two more goals from Briggs, a 25-yard free kick, and D. Shaw who fired home after J. Spence had the misfortune of having a candidate for miss of the season already.

Hessle were good value for this win and will have gained a lot of confidence from the manner in which they achieved the three points.

Kingburn Athletic 1 Bransholme Athletic 1

In the first fixture of the season Bransholme Athletic started brightly against home side Kingburn Athletic and were one nil up inside the space of five minutes.

Paul Stevenson coming from deep laid a ball off to Liam Lewis whose quality pass found Brad Allon, the young winger then drove the ball in from a tight angle, which caused confusion at Kingburn's near post and somehow found the back of the net.

Provider Lewis was unlucky not to put the visitors two up when a through ball from man of the match Dean Longhorn again found Brad Allon whose cross was turned over the bar by the head of young Lewis.

On 25 minutes Kingburn had a one on one opportunity but Mike Antcliffe stood tall in the visitors gaol and parried the shot away.

Kingburn were unlucky not to equalise before the half when a looping header hit the top of the cross bar and bounced away to safety.

Brad Allon also had an opportunity to further extend Bransholme's lead when a cross from Andy Fishwick was met with a header that again went over the bar.

The second half saw Kingburn come into the ascendancy as Bransholme's flowing football seemed to falter in the wind and they eventually drew level when a soft free kick seemed to elude the defence on mass and squirm its way into the goal.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game with Leigh Staplehurst shooting wide of the mark for Bransholme on 72 minutes and a fine strike from the edge of the box by the Kingburn attack forced Antcliffe to pull off a flying save.

With the referee adding six minutes to the end of the game Bransholme had no less than three chances to win it.

A long ball out from Mike Antcliffe saw Lewis Franklin beat the opposition keeper to the bounce only for the resultant header to loop over the crossbar.

Brad Allon then had two golden opportunities, the first saw him work hard to beat defence and keeper only to side foot the ball harmlessly to the man on the line to clear.

The second was a veritable stinger from 20 yards which crashed off the underside of the cross bar and into the back of the net, only for the referee to deem a Bransholme player in an offside position.

On reflection a draw was probably the right result but Bransholme cannot afford to miss golden opportunities if they want to progress to the Humber Premier Division.

With 16 available on the day and three absent from the squad, players were bound to be disappointed not receiving a start, their time will come however but they must want to stay and play together.

With only 12 players currently available for next week's game against Inter Charter, that chance to stake a claim has already arrived.

Long Riston 2 Bridlington Sports Club 3

In a windy, and at times, torrential first half Bridlington Sports Club set off like an express train and Long Riston were hard pushed to try and get into the game.

The visitors were probing and pushing all the while, especially down their left wing.

They nearly went ahead from a well hit quickly taken free kick but Mark Stanley was on his mettle to spot it and tip it over.

But from the corner, whipped in with pace and the wind moving it around, it went straight in. 1-0 to Bridlington.

Riston then rolled up their sleeves and they were unlucky not to equalise as they hit the bar.

It then became end to end stuff.

Then as Riston went close with a corner, Bridlington shot up the field with the cleared ball and went 2-0 up after the counterattack.

The sun came out for the second half and shortly afterwards Riston brought on Lee Chapman.

Within a few minutes of entering the fray he'd seized on the rebound from a free kick to make it 2-1 and game on.

But just as Riston got on top another counterattack, and a defensive slip, made it 3-1.

But as the game wore on Riston came more and more into the game.

Lee Chapman then made it 3-2 with a fine 20 yard half volley.

Riston felt certain they should have had at least one penalty as they strove for the winner.

But in the end the home side ran out of time to find the deserved equaliser in a closely fought game.

Withernsea 0 Brandesburton 3

Withernsea AFC started the season on a bad note following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Brandesburton.

The visitors looked a completely different outfit then last season, including a bit more youth within their ranks and the pace up front caused the Seasiders problems.

Withernsea weren't helped by the loss of new signings Paul Wilkinson and Jimmy Neilson through injury and Glenn Ratcliffe who opted to play cricket at the last minute.

In addition to this still missing through injury were Gary Wilkinson and Phil Good.

Although Dunn returned to the squad for his first game since the first pre-season fixture with Bransholme over a month ago.

In the first half the visitors caused Withernsea all kinds of problems, albeit with wind advantage and Richardson was a very busy man in the Seasiders goal where he saved two early one-on-ones and watched another two shots go past his post or over the crossbar.

Brandesburton did take the lead though from a corner, when a free header at the back post was put back across the face of goal and another player found himself with a free header in the box to head home.

Only five minutes later Richardson made a slight misjudgement of a through ball when he took his eye off the ball and completely missed it leaving the striker to put the ball into an empty net.

Withernsea couldn't seem to string a pass together and were restricted to one long range shot from Dawson and a header over by Wilson.

In the second-half Withernsea came more into the game with the wind advantage but still rarely failed to threaten the visitors goal.

Brandesburton looked dangerous on the counter, especially in the last 20 minutes as it was Withernsea doing all the pressing.

Finn headed straight at the goalkeeper from close range following a Wilson cross, Dawson tried his luck from range again and Brandesburton had to be on their toes for several corners, but they were, better then Withernsea in the first-half anyway!

Hedon Rangers 1 Chalk Lane 1

The opening of the first game of the season with Chalk Lane starting the campaign to defend the Humber Premier League title could not have been worse for the team when they found themselves a goal down after just two minutes with Hedon Rangers taking the lead following some sloppy defending.

With a strong wind at their backs Chalk found it difficult to come to terms with the conditions and rarely tested Derek Peat in the home goal.

At the same time Phil Dobson had to be alert and made a couple of good saves to avoid Hedon extending their lead.

Chalk equalised after a period of sustained pressure when Joe Addinall headed home in the 42nd minute from a fine cross from James Robinson.

Chalk looked more comfortable against the wind and threatened on several occasion but Hedon kept them out well and always looked dangerous on the break, particularly down their right hand side.

With a much changed team Chalk settled down and played much better in the second half.

Craig Martin and Danny Thompson were introduced from the bench late on to freshen things up and they fashioned the best chance of the game which saw Thompson break clear of the defence only to see his shot go agonisingly wide with Peat beaten.

In the end both teams had to settle for a point which was probably a fair result.

Hessle Rangers 2 Sculcoates Amateurs 0

Hessle enjoyed a hard fought 2-0 victory over a strong Scully's team to maintain their impressive start to the season.

This tight encounter was a very competitive game, which for the opening 30 minutes was a midfield battle for supremacy, that neither team could establish total control.

Indeed it was from a set piece that Hessle broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when Gardiner headed home from Briggs free kick. Scully's responded and forced a good save from Garniss who preserved Hessle's lead with a good save which enabled Hessle to go in 1-0 at half time.

Scully's made a couple of early changes, but it was Hessle who increased their lead when D. Bird finished from close range to continue his hot streak and put Hessle 2-0 up.

Scully's were pushing forward at every opportunity, but were thwarted by some terrific goal keeping and resolute defending, which denied any time and space to Scully's, who were always open to the quick counter attacks from Hessle's strike force.

With the game entering the last 10 minutes Scully's missed a glorious chance from close range to get back in the game, and with that miss, Scully's chances of getting a result vanished.

Hessle even had the luxury of missing a late penalty which D. Bird placed wide, but even that miss could not hide Hessle's joy at the final whistle, for what was a hard fought victory over a strong Scully's outfit.

North Cave 3 North Ferriby Athletic 1

North Cave opened their first game of the season with a very composed and controlled 10 minutes.

After a long ball by Ferriby, Jennings decided to come out of the goal and the Ferriby forward placed a lob over Jennings head to give Ferriby a 1-0 lead.

Cave started to settle and began moving and passing the ball better. A 60-yard pass from Smith found Gorman who coolly headed the ball in the bottom corner of the net to even the score.

Within five minutes, Smith found Gorman again, who scored his second of the match to provide North Cave with a 2-1 lead at half time.

Ferriby commenced the second half the better side but, out of the blue, Gorman bagged and outstanding and deserved hat-trick.

The game died during the last 25 minutes and North Cave came away from a local derby with a well deserved victory.

East Riding Rangers 1 Inter Charter FC 1

A good first half saw East Riding take advantage of a strong wind to take a deserved lead.

This was cancelled out by a well taken free kick from just outside the box before the break.

In the second period Charter had the better of things and should have scored when presented with a glorious chance which Lian Laybourne failed the convert.

Inter, who had been reduced to 10 men were awarded a penalty which was well saved by Rangers keeper.

In the end a draw was perhaps the fairest score.

Hessle Sporting 9 Malet Lambert 0

Newly-promoted Hessle Sporting got away to a flying start to life in the Premier.

The highlight was a five-goal haul from Leon Garland with a brace from Liam Key.

Richards and Esa completed the rout.

Despite the score line the game was played in good spirit throughout and Malet played a positive part in the game by keeping going and make a contest of the match for the full duration.

Hornsea Town 2 Cleethorpes Town 3

Hornsea went three goals down in the first half due mainly to shoddy defending.

Whilst an appeal for a penalty was turned away at the other end.

Hornsea made a spirited attempt to get back into the game in the second period and Danny Bunch and Chris Adam's reduced the arrears to a single goal.

However, they were unable to produce another goal to take a deserved share of the points.

Reckitts 0 Beverley Town 4

Neither side was able the create much of a chance to take the lead during a first half in which Town had the better of things.

In the second period Beverley made a change pushing an extra forward into the mix and the chances began to come thick and fast. Lamplough, Jagger and O'Connell all went close before the break through finally came.

There was only 10 minutes left when Steve Skinns produced a superb strike from 25 yards.

Durham doubled the lead on 88 minutes after good work by McKeowan. Durham then returned the favour for McKeowan to net the third and Craig Lamplough completed the scoring in the dying seconds to get Beverley off to a great start.

St. Andrews FC 3 Sculcoates Amateurs 3

Leng made it 1-0 to St. Andrews on 10 minutes. Keeper Roberts, making his debut, made a good save and his clearance fell the Leng who grabbed his brace and doubled St. Andrews' lead.

McLoughlin the old man of the side at 24 then grabbed a goal to give the home side a 3-0 interval lead.

Sculcoates set about getting back into the game in the second half and reduced the arrears and pulled two goals back before St. Andrews conceded a penalty and Sculcoates completed their come back to take a point.
