EAST YORKS: Celebrated artist David Hockney has said he was "touched" by the number of people who visited his Bigger Trees artwork in Hull.

The huge painting has been on display at the city's Ferens Art Gallery since June until September 18.

At the launch of a major new exhibition featuring his work at the Royal Academy in London, Hockney praised the unique nature of East Yorkshire.

He said: "It's a lovely little bit of England with hidden valleys and unspoiled landscapes."

Hockney has spent 30 Christmases in Bridlington.

He said: "I was touched by the number of local people that have been to see Bigger Trees near Warter during its exhibition in Hull."

The new exhibition, A Bigger Picture, opens in January 2012 at the Royal Academy Of Arts. It will be the first major exhibition in the UK to showcase Hockney's landscape work, inspired by the Yorkshire landscape. The exhibition spans 50 years of the artist's work.

Janet Reuben, chief executive of Visit Hull And East Yorkshire, said: "This exhibition is a wonderful gift for East Yorkshire – one of the greatest living artists is bringing the beautiful landscape of the Yorkshire Wolds to an international audience."

While i am not a big fan of Hockney, i would go and see his exhibition if i was in the area.”

“Just in case any of the local philistines are interested, The Royal Academy [in London] is holding an exhibition of landscape work by Hockney, called "David Hockney: A Bigger Picture", from January 21st, 2012, which will "...be his biggest showing of new work for many years, and will include around 150 paintings, sketches, iPad drawings and film work, most of which have been completed in the past six years, after Hockney moved to Bridlington...".

Mind you don't cut your trotters on those pearls.”

“l too was very disappointed in bigger trees, it looked like something the youth group had done while enjoy a bigmac and a coke accepatble but not special certainly not deserving of a display.l recognise he has talent but this appeared to me more like something you would keep in the garage to demonstrate a technigue”

“I saw Hockney's work on Look North & I was amazed how poor it was.
If I painted stuff like that I'd be laughed at & it'd be called rubbish, but a named artist paints it & it's fantastic & worth millions.
The snobbery in the art world never ceases to amaze me.”
