People are invited to make up their own minds about hunting by joining East Yorkshire's first meet of the season.

Leaders of the historic Holderness Hunt want people to see for themselves at their showcase event on Saturday, October 30.

It comes as the Countryside Alliance holds Hunting Newcomers' Week to encourage new faces at hunts around the country.

But the 250-year-old Holderness Hunt, based at Etton, near Beverley, says support is on the increase as it prepares for the new season.

The number of riders and supporters was expected to fall following the controversial ban on hunting with hounds or dogs in February 2005.

Holderness Hunt's senior master William Bethell, said: "I don't know if we are bucking the trend, but we already enjoy excellent support.

"The Countryside Alliance's initiative to get newcomers to hunts is welcome, but it is something we have always encouraged.

"We recently had more than 100 riders at a pre-season meet at our kennels in Etton, which shows the level of support we are getting."

Many believe the ban raised the profile of the countryside pastime and led to hunts, like the Holderness, showing they can stick to the law.

The legislation stops hunts setting out with hounds to kill a fox, but they can get the round the rules by following a synthetic trail.

Hunters showing no intent to chase or kill a fox with hounds or dogs, or other wild animals. are acting within the law.

David Elliott, the hunt's professional huntsman, said: "Hunts are getting more support now than before the ban.

"People love to get out into the fresh air and see a pack of hounds working in the countryside.

A Humberside Police spokesman said hunts worked with neighbourhood policing teams to stop potential problems.

The opening meet will be at Rise Park, near Skirlaugh, at 11am.

“I thought sport was where both sides had an equal chance of competing/winning?

This is nothing but glorified murder and I hate the lot of them. Toffs who think murdering makes them above everyone else. Sort your morals out before you start looking down on people.”

“'Hunters showing no intent to chase or kill a fox with hounds or dogs, or other wild animals. are acting within the law.'

The key word being 'intent' which these abhorent people know is difficult to prove as long as they hide the kill from those who believe they are only drag hunting.

They breed foxes all over the country via artificial earths so they can pretend to by pest controllers. They claim to take out only the old and infirm and yet salivate every year over cubbing season. You have to ask yourself what type of person gets pleasure from terrifying and killing young fox cubs - but I suspect you already know the answer. These are the same people who once claimed that slavery was also humane. They just haven't moved on since then.”
