A HARD-hit seaside town is bouncing back from tough financial times.

Six units opening in a new retail development in Hornsea is the latest project attracting national retailers to the east coast.

Innovating Space developer director Simon Dixon has told the Mail Cooplands Bakery, Fultons and The Original Factory Shop will be moving into the £1.5 million development on the site of the former petrol station in Newbegin.

Robinsons newsagents, which was on the site prior to the start of work, is to move back into a unit when the work is complete, and there has also been interest from a national coffee brand, a chemist and an opticians.

Mr Dixon said: "This development can only be positive for the town.

"As well as the investment in the town centre, it will also create more car parking and 80 jobs.

"It is full steam ahead now and I hope it will encourage residents to shop in Hornsea."

According to Mr Dixon, about 87 per cent of Hornsea residents shop away from the town.

Earlier this month, Tesco opened in the town and there are also plans by Kemp Developments Ltd to create six retail units in a half-Victorian and half-Edwardian building along Newbegin.

Mr Dixon said: "It is great the work has started and we hope our development will be completed and open by the beginning of July.

"It could also help other developments in the area, as it shows national retailers have confidence in the town centre."

It is the latest success for the town, following the ongoing multi-million pound investment of the town's Freeport shopping village.

In the past 12 months, Cotton Traders, Mountain Warehouse, Regatta and Nike have opened up on the Rolston Road site.

Centre manager Simon Tudor said: "We're delighted with our overall performance throughout 2011. The results show we're heading in the right direction and we feel confident the centre will continue to go from strength to strength.

"We've got a number of exciting plans ahead of us for this year."

    “ItsDownToYou,

Your poetry is wonderful and you're undoubtedly a persistent critic/crusader but do you really believe Tesco will disappear? - They haven't invested 'millions' in this store for it fail and even though the company had a 'disappointing' last quarter in 2011, I'm afraid they will succeed - Simply because they employ some of the most astute retail management brains in the business. Failure is not and has never been acceptable in their business strategies or, performance.

Sorry to disappoint you but as always, they will review any 'teething' problems, correct them and move forward.

Just the same, as I sense my comments will be like 'water off a duck's back' - I do still wish you 'all the best!'”

    “TESCOS LATEST MARKETING FLOP!

Spend £40 and get £5 off your next shop of £40 or more. Lets look at this......

That means you have to spend £80 ( 2 Trips) 0r more to save £5. Thats a overall saving of 6%.

Why would you do this when ASDA garauntee to beat Tescos by 10% anyway, your paying more than 4% more to start with!

But before some of you start.. "its A day trip, its further away, cost of fuel, what if you havn't a car.etc.etc.

Asda will deliver to your door for £3.(saving your time, fuel etc.) and even more its not like the delivery what tesco do, where if there out of stock they replace with"Tesco Finest range" at 3 times the price. Asda will replace with next highest value product or larger size AT THE SAME PRICE. ITS A NO BRAINER!!!! WIN, WIN,WIN.

PRICE COMPARISON TIME (lets choose an everyday item we all buy- MILK)

4 Pints of milk at Heron Foods £1.00
4 Pints of Milk at ASDA £1.00
4 Pints at Tesco £1.18 (THATS 18% MORE THAN LOCAL SHOP OR ASDA)

NOW THATS SOMETHING FOR YOU ALL TO THINK ABOUT.....”

“Freeport is deserted and full of rubbish shops. If you doubt this try having a wander across in the afternoon.....ghost town.
Hornsea itself could be a nice place, but it is so far behind the times and there is nothing to do.
The beach is lovely but the whole seafront needs some attractions. A few kiddies rides, mini golf etc would help.
Imo the main problem with Hornsea is everything is too spread out. Seafront, Mere, Freeport, Park and now bloody Tesco's.”

My husband who is from Hornsea remembers the WW2 DUKW , he seems to think it was on the mere, not the beach.”

“Just a question to Hornsea folks of old.Can you confirm that once a DUCK,the ex world war boat ,took trips along the beach and into the sea,and I remember it was burried in the sands. Also I remember the little train that ran along the prom and the boating pool and the go track.,and even the wooden pier.Nice to see new shops opening in Hornsea and hope locals use them instead of a TESCO take all trade. It is also nice to see the old railway line from Hull to Hornsea is still there, and that I helped converting that into the Hornsea Rail Trail in my old Humberside days when the Council once wanted to sell it.Hornsea is a little gem and nice to see locals wanting to help at the Floral Hall site and glad that that the Freeport is doing well with local employment”

“There have been some great comments, in particular 'prevs' 'peterwolds' 'itsdowntoyou' 'missfoodlove' et al. It proves that people who live in Hornsea do care about the town's future and character. It would not cost vast somes of money to improve the land next to the Floral Hall, I'm sure lots of us would be prepared to donate bulbs /flowers and if there is no money to plant and care for this area perhaps some would be prepared to volunteer. It would have been great if local artists, potters, authors etc could have had a few units to sell their products.(reduced rents and rates) Local traders should be encouraged to stay (again rent reductions and rate reductions.) Lets hope the landlords and council listen.”

“I see your point it is run down and it certainly looks nothing like it did a decade ago or even longer but i still find it has a lovely feel to it maybe because i have seen everything hornsea is about and what it could offer if given the fair treatment it truly deserves. The amusement arcades are shocking now my children use to love the games and the 2p machines but even the staff there are miserable and sometimes just damn rude. i love hornsea i would certainly love to see it restored to it's former glory !!”

    “prevs
rather than putting money into shops the council needs to sort the beach straight area out run down amusement arcades or boarded up ones plus the front area going up to the boat compound is not appealing at all. also time a decision was made about floral hall seems to have gone onto the back burner as that side of town is poor.
I am not knocking hornsea as live there & love it just commenting how tourists see it.”

SPOT ON !! It's true i have family who have lived there all their lives and i pass through on a very regular basis so i have seen the changes and the flops first hand !!
People choose what they think is right and what they believe to be honest and trustworthy so putting the big brands in hornsea to fail surely must come to a halt and the local coucil must start putting the money into the local shops and businesses to help grow and restore hornsea back to a family resort thriving from outsiders who want to be there for the right reasons.”
