Hull City missed out on a chance to move back into the Championship top six after an entertaining stalemate with Brighton.

Cameron Stewart and Aaron Mclean came closest to breaking the deadlock in a game the Tigers will feel they should have won.

Stewart produced the most memorable moment of the first half when his superb strike from the edge of the area struck the bar.

Earlier, he saw a shot cleared off the line and was denied in a one-on-one by the Seagulls' impressive goalkeeper Peter Brezovan.

And Brezovan was kept busy as Robbie Brady, with an overhead kick, and Matty Fryatt forced saves.

Energetic second-half substitute Mclean fired over from eight yards when it looked easier to score, before nearly grabbing all three points at the end with a strongly struck overhead kick, but Brezovan was well-placed.

Man of the match Paul McKenna, James Chester and Vito Mannone were solid again for the Tigers, for whom yet another clean sheet will be some consolation.

Both sides were applauded off by a crowd of 17,769.

Updates: Nick Barmby has backed his strikers to come good after the goalless stalemate with Brighton.

Hull City's Cameron Stewart has been called up to England's under-21s squad.

“Another clean sheet for Mannone - 6 for 6 in the league. Pity the other end of the team can't figure out how to do their job.

"the Seagulls' impressive goalkeeper Peter Brezovan." Now that's a statement you woudn't have come up with if you only watched the Liverpool game - he was dire. The way he kept punching the ball, he looked more like he was in a boxing match than a football game.”

“Great effort and I am still happy at the position we are at in the league. Another clean sheet great record, but as I have already posted, clean sheets and wishful thinking do not win games. Not winning games means not getting enough points for promotion. The team is still work in progress we all know that including the rose tint brigade, NB and the owners needed to address the gaol famine we need goals to complement the clean sheets UTT”
