HULL City under-18s boss Billy Russell believes his side must take heart from their FA Youth Cup adventure, despite losing 3-0 to Liverpool at the KC Stadium.

A bid to become the first City side ever to reach the semi-finals ended as Liverpool eventually broke their hosts' resolve with three second-half goals.

Decisive strikes from Lloyd James and Jack Dunn (2) condemned City to a quarter-final exit but in reaching the last eight for the first time in 22 years, Russell had reassuring words for his "despondent" troops.

"They've done really well and it's difficult to get that across to them," said Russell, who saw his City side keep their illustrious visitors at bay for 53 minutes.

"They're despondent because it was a big night for them and they've been on the end of a disappointing defeat.

"It might not feel like it now but they can be proud of what they've achieved and hopefully it's something the younger lads will want to do again next year.

"You learn the hardest lessons in defeat."

"It's a great learning experience for them, playing at the KC Stadium for the first time and in front of a crowd. It's a great experience to play against a side like Liverpool too and we've got to learn from it.

"All in all it's been a good run but it's football at the end of the day and it can be a cruel game."

“Agree, good performance by the City Youth.
One Liverpool player cost them £500,000 and this is what we are up against.
First goal looked offside to me and the City keeper and centre half thought likewise, third goal was a fluke.
Decent crowd on a horrible night, the weather matched only by the pitch which is in a dreadful state.
Shame we had a smattering of people there wearing Liverpool colours and boasting in broad Hull accents.”

“Well Done to Billy, Manny and the team, 9 hull and east riding boys in the starting eleven, compared to liverpool's worldwide squad, you did city and club proud.”
