Fraizer Campbell remains Steve Bruce's top target as Hull City step up their search for a new striker following the loss of Sone Aluko to injury.

Although Bruce admits signing a striker before the weekend will prove difficult, the need for fresh attacking blood has been sharpened significantly in the last 48 hours.

Having already allowed Aaron Mclean to join Ipswich on loan this month, the loss of Aluko leaves only Nick Proschwitz and Jay Simpson as recognised striking options.

Sunderland's Campbell remains the priority, although the net will be cast further afield with just 14 days until the transfer window closes.

"Losing Sone heightens the need to act but, as I've always said, it's very difficult to get a striker in January," said Bruce, who is also making enquiries in a bid to bring Fulham keeper David Stockdale back to the KC on loan.

"We'll do the best we possibly can. The owners have done fantastically well over the last couple of weeks with the signings of David Meyler and Robbie Brady, but they realise now we're in a bit of a pickle so we'll see what we can do.

"There's nothing on the agenda as we stand but we're always looking."

Although disappointed by Ahmed Elmohamady's recall to Sunderland, sources have suggested to the Mail that he could yet return to the KC once injuries clear at the Stadium of Light.

The player is known to have enjoyed his loan spell at the Tigers, making 23 appearances in the Championship.

Not part of Martin O'Neill's long-term plans at Sunderland, dialogue between the two clubs will continue over the coming weeks, with a second loan spell still a possibility.

In the meantime Liam Rosenior will fill his role at right wing-back.

“FC was not the target is the latest rumour / info around the forums etc.....Steve Bruce never even spoke to MON about him...

But it could be someone from a team in west yorkshire.

true or not time will tell as they say.

best we stay posative and wait and see”

“If Bruce really wanted Campbell and if the Allam's had sanctioned a bid then surely one would have been made before now. It was common knowledge that City were showing interest in the player and it was obvious that other clubs would try to land him in January. I don't know how much Sunderland were asking for him but more than a couple of million would have been a huge risk given his glass knees. All this talk about back stabbing is nonsense, it's all about cash and footballers have a short working life that can be ended at any time by injury, any one else in Campbell's shoes would have done the same.”

“Before we all start getting carried away.....Maybe it would be wise to find out (a) whether we had any real interest in Campbell,(b) whether Steve Bruce saw him as the answer or (c) whether any dialogue had taken place between Hull and Sunderland???”

“@carlwilkinson just tell me how he has stabbed us in the back again? If I remember rightly it was only a week or so ago he sounded out through his dad his agent he would like to to return to the kc. It's not his fault if our board aren't quick enough in putting the cash on the table and offering him the terms he is looking for. As they say! If your not fast your last. I personally believe Bruce has other targets in mind otherwise would have been knocking on the Allams door asking for cash to secure his services if he really wanted him. At the end of the day, if someone offered you a job would you take it or leave it? I kow what I would do. So with that said , if he does go to Cardiff then fair play to him, same as when he went to Sunderland, we all want what is best suited to our bank balance!”

“On the Campbell saga-,We've been here before and the fans are now realising what's going to happen. There's no way he'll be coming to Hull City when he's 99% certain of Premiership football with Cardiff. As quoted by carlwilkinson "stabbed us in back once again"”

Thank God for that, I've had a sleepless night & not eaten thinking that the useless Cameron Stewart might get his place. I'll sleep well tonight.”
