Saturday at Hull’s annual celebration of the arts features a performance from the legendary Martha Reeves and a Warhol-inspired exhibition.

Freedom, a weekend carnival of music, dance, theatre, comedy and art, sees thousands flock to venues across Hull city centre from Thursday September 6 to 9.

Now in its fifth year, Freedom is firmly established in the festival calendar, and welcomes performers and artists from across the UK and Europe.

11am: The Freedom Factory Warhol Workshops, 6-8 Humber Street

Be the subject of an Andy Warhol-style portrait and watch art roll off the production line at The Freedom Factory.

The exhibition, which is free to enter, runs until 6pm.

11am: The Longest Book in the World… of Hull, Humber Street

Created by artist Mandy Keating and members of the public, the Longest Book in the World… of Hull details the lives of local people, identifying their ‘Hard Times, Great Expectations’.

The exhibition, which can be enjoyed free of charge, runs until 6pm.

11am: Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall, Teatro Spiegeltent, Fruit Market, Wellington Street

Bop along with your little ones to jazz, Latin, rock, funk, pop and soul at this disco for the under-fives.

Tickets: £5.50/£4 Concession; £15 Family Ticket (2 adults , 2 Kids).

Runs until 11.45am.

11am: Freedom Markets, Humber Street and Queen Street

Enjoy the antiques, fashion, food and furnishings on offer at the Freedom Markets, which boast more than 40 local, Fairtrade and eco-friendly stalls.

The markets, which are free to enter, remain open until 11pm.

11am: Seeds for the Desert, Studio Eleven, 11 Humber Street

A celebration of sustainability, enjoy car allotments and living landscapes with a large dose of flower power.

This free exhibition runs until late.

11am: Aquatint Etching with Lindy Norton, Studio Eleven, 11 Humber Street

Learn the art of traditional acid etching on a zinc plate.

Tickets: £40 for members/£45 for non-members. Only six places available, booking essential.

The class runs until 4pm.

11am: Freedom Picnic & Sean The Sheep, Queens Gardens

A family-fun day filled with face painting, arts and crafts, Shirley sheep space hopper races, cabbage football keepy uppy, a Flock and Roll obstacle course and a naughty pigs sack race.

This free event runs until 5pm.

12 noon: The Residents Association – Jamaica Day, Fruit Space, 62-63 Humber Street

Celebrate 50 years of Jamaican independence with authentic music, Jamacian food from PIE, live illustration and graffiti as well as film screenings.

The event, which is free to enter, goes on until 7pm. At 7pm Eighteen Deejays take over, playing eclectic music for the over-18s until 1am.

12.30: The Velveteen Rabbit, Teatro Spiegeltent, Fruit Market, Wellington Street

The literary classic is brought to life with realistic puppetry.

1pm: Pragnya Dance Centre, Dance Stage, Wellington Street

Local dance talent Kingston Swing takes to the stage as part of Hull Dance and Creative Voice.

This free event runs until 1.30pm.

1.30pm Maia, Pier Stage, Nelson Street

A four-piece alternative, acoustic band from Huddersfield take to the stage.

The free performance runs until 2pm.

1.30pm: Bossa Revista, E20 Yellow Bus Stage, Wellington Street

Unique interpretations and arrangements of Bossa Nova music.

The free performance runs until 2pm.

1.50pm: The Van Man – C-12 Dance Theatre, Dance Stage 2, Humber Place (next to Teatro Spiegeltent)

East London-based choreographer Annie-Lunnette Deakin-Foster C-12 Dance Theatre presents an outdoor experience explosion of live theatrical dance and physical theatre within and around a van.

This free performance runs until 2.10pm.

2pm: City of Light (Matinee), Hull Truck Theatre, Spring Street

A performance following the fortunes of Bert and Rose, City of Light is a story of Hull Fair recalled by the people of Hull themselves.

The performance charts the tale of Bert and Rose, from the moment they meet at Hull Fair in 1935 to the day Bert goes back to the Fair to look for his lost love.

Tickets: £12.

2.15pm: Patrick Monahan: Shooting From the Lip, Teatro Spiegeltent, Fruit Market, Wellington Street

ITV’s Show Me the Funny winner Patrick Monahan brings his anecdotal stand-up to Hull.

Tickets: £5.50/Concessions £4; £15 Family Ticket (2 adults , 2 Kids).

This performance runs until 3.15pm.

2.15pm: Tim Kliphuis Gypsy Jazz Quartet, E20 Yellow Bus Stage, Wellington Street

This Holland band takes the music of Vivaldi, Beethoven and Paganini, and blends with Grapelli gypsy jazz, celtic, folk and world music.

This free performance runs until 3pm.

2.20pm: Gary Stewart Band, Pier Stage, Nelson Street

Scottish singer/songwriter Gary Stewart and his band perform songs about love and paranoia.

This free performance runs until 2.55pm.

3pm: Skyline Dance Troupe/Hearty Lives, The Dance Stage, Wellington Street

Local talents take to the stage as part of Hull Dance and Creative Voice.

This free performance runs until 3.30pm.

3.15pm: Cattle & Cane, Pier Stage, Nelson Street

Northern family affair indie/rock band take to the stage.

This free performance runs until 3.50pm.

3.30pm: Terrarium – Dance in a Bubble, Dance Stage 2, Humber Place (next to Teatro Spiegeltent)

Sit around a large transparent bubble to view dance inspired by the North York Moors inside.

This free performance runs until 3.50pm, and then again from 5.30pm-5.50pm and 7.30pm-7.50pm.

3.30pm: A Dread Supreme, E20 Yellow Bus Stage, Wellington Street

An intriguing mix of jazz and ska. This free performance runs until 4.45pm.

4pm: Lili La Scala: Songs to Make You Smile

An hour of funny vintage songs.

4.15pm: Fossil Collective, Pier Stage, Nelson Street

Leeds-based duo who last month became the latest in a line of emerging musicians to sign with record label Dirty Hit.

This free performance runs until 4.55pm.

4.45pm: Wyke College/Hull Youth Dance Group, Dance Stage, Wellington Street

Local talents take to the stage as part of Hull Dance and Creative Voice.

This free performance runs until 5pm.

5pm: Danza, Dance Stage, Wellington Street

Local dance talent Danza takes to the stage as part of Hull Dance and Creative Voice.

This free performance runs until 5.15pm.

5.15pm: Dutch Gypsy Jazz Legends, E20 Yellow Bus Stage, Wellington Street

Dutch superstars Paulus Schaffer and Tim Kliphuis with their band evoke the spirit of Django Reinhardt.

This free performance runs for one hour.

5.20pm: Hope & Social, Pier Stage, Nelson Street

A Leeds-based rock band take to the stage. This free performance runs until 6.15pm.

5.30pm: Terrarium – Dance in a Bubble, Dance Stage 2, Humber Place (next to Teatro Spiegeltent)

Sit around a large transparent bubble to view dance inspired by the North York Moors inside.

This performance runs until 5.50pm, and then again from 7.30pm-7.50pm.

5.45pm: Doug Segal – How to Read Minds & Influence People, Teatro Spiegeltent, Fruit Market, Wellington Street

Dubbed a funny Derren Brown, TV star Doug Segal amuses with ways to read minds and implant subliminal messages.

Tickets: £5.50/Concessions £4.

Runs until 6.45pm.

6.15pm: The Love Cannon Parade, departs Wellington Street

Acclaimed artists Walker and Bromwich’s Love Cannon – pink inflatable and loveable – is designed to shoot balloons into the skies in an action for peace.

This free event runs until 6.45pm.

6.45pm New York Brass Band, E20 Yellow Bus Stage, Wellington Street

Yorkshire’s authentic contemporary New Orleans-style funky brass band take to the streets.

Free, runs until 7.45pm.

6.45pm: Threads Orchestra, E20 Yellow Bus Stage, Wellington Street

Dynamic jazz and classical musicians collide.

Free, runs until 8pm.

7pm: Swiss Lips, Pier Stage, Nelson Street

Half an hour of pure pop, free of charge.

7pm: The residents association – 18 dJ’s, Fruit Space, 62-63 Humber Street

A night of eclectic music. This free event runs until 1am.

7.30pm: Terrarium – Dance in a Bubble, Dance Stage, Wellington Street

7.30pm: Chris Difford & Norman Lovett, Teatro Spiegeltent, Fruit Market, Wellington Street

Squeeze lyricist and legend Chris Difford joins forces with Red Dwarf star and stand-up comedian Norman Lovett for an evening of songs, tall tales and big laughs.

7.45pm: City of Light, Hull Truck Theatre, Spring Street

8pm: Circus Ronaldo – Amortale, Fruit Market, Humber Street/Queen Street

An evening of comedy, theatre and visual delights, Circus Ronaldo sees a traditional Belgian circus family perform in the shadows of circus caravans and inside their circus tent.

Runs until 9.30pm.

8.30pm: New York Brass Band, E20 Yellow Bus Stage, Wellington Street

Yorkshire’s authentic contemporary New Orleans-style funky brass band take to the streets.

8.40pm: The Milk, Pier Stage, Nelson Street

Hotly-tipped newcomers play contemporary soulful pop.

Free, runs until 9.10pm.

9.15pm: The Showstoppers, Teatro Spiegeltent, Fruit Market, Wellington Street

A brand new musical comedy is created from scratch at each performance of this award-winning production. Audience suggestions become an all-singing, all-dancing show on the spot.

The show has played sell-out seasons in London’s West end, and has been part of the Rdinburgh Fringe for five years.

9.15pm: Kid British, E20 Yellow Bus Stage, Wellington Street

Old school ska and dancehall, a generous twist of indie, a light splash of reggae and garnished with a juicy slice of electro pop.

9.40pm: Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Pier Stage, Nelson Street

Motown’s brightest female star and a fully inducted member of the rock ‘n’ roll

Hall of Fame, the original soul-diva brings her ‘Vandellas’ to Freedom with all the hits;

nowhere To run, dancing in The Street, Heatwave, Third Finger left Hand and Jimmy mac.

This free performance runs until 10.55pm.

10.15pm: DJ The Reverend, E20 Yellow Bus Stage, Wellington Street

Sweet tunes from “Easy Skanking” DJ spinning a mixture of Reggae, Soul and Jazz.

Free, runs until 11.00pm.

11pm: Freedom Late: Snake Davis & his Band, Teatro Spiegeltent, Fruit Market, Wellington Street

A four-piece band playing a mix of soul world funk and jazz. Always melodic, always soulful.

Tickets £5.50/£4 Concession.

Runs until 12.30am.
