Hull and Humber skipper undergoes surgery
The Hull and Humber skipper has undergone emergency surgery on his broken leg.
Piers Dudin, 31, was airlifted to a Japanese hospital after suffering an open fracture.
A giant wave knocked him off his feet as he led the yacht through the Pacific Ocean, on Thursday.
A spokesperson for Clipper Ventures said: "He is in good spirits and has even learned a few words of Japanese.
Mr Dudin was the only professional yachtsman onboard the Hull and Humber.
The skipper from Spirit of Australia has now taken over as the skipper until they reach San Francisco in two weeks.
A more permanent replacement will then be found.
Meanwhile, an experienced crewman onboard Spirit of Australia has taken charge of their yacht temporarily.
The Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race lasts 10 months and concludes in Hull, in June.

“Capt pugwash , I hardley think the experience of a fishing boat deck hand is qualification enough to call knowledge.
Your seaman experience shows through in your lack of coherence ..too much rum perhaps ?
Retirement is there for a reason , it stops people too old to have an opinion from having an opinion in important matters
Go back to reading your popeye magazines and stop trying to wind people up !”

“Stephen,Don't talk rubbish we know most of the crews are none professionals, IT IS WITH LUCK THE SOA HAD AN EXPERIENCED CREW MEMBER ON BOARD, These yachts are sailing across oceans NOT DOWN THE HUMBER. Don't say i don't know what i am talking about, ihave more deep sea time in my little finger that would take you a life time to achieve.”

“"capt pugwash", no actually, you don't know what you're talking about.
Each yacht only has ONE professional sailor onboard; the skipper.
All other crew are amateurs, with varying levels of sailing experience. Some have never sailed before their Clipper training, and some have sailed extensively. It is with luck therefore, that SOA happened to have a crewmember on board whose experience was such that he was able to step up to acting skipper.”

“Piers as broken a leg??? any one with any sea going experience will know this is all part of the work involved and a lot worse at times. I sympathise with Piers but not to have a back up ( as i have said in previous comments) is a total lack of fore sight. I see The Spirit of Australia does not have this problem.OR DID HE WANT THE GLORY,IT SOUNDS LIKE IT BY HIS MOTHER. Being a life time at sea over 50years i know what i am talking about.”
