SCOTT Murrell says captaining Hull KR in their 36-36 draw with St Helens was the pinnacle of his career so far.

With Ben Galea and Michael Dobson out injured, Rovers coach Craig Sandercock handed Murrell the captain's armband at MS3 Craven Park.

And although he could not crown it with a win, after a late penalty earned Saints a last-gasp draw, the 26-year-old was pleased to take on the role.

"It's a great honour to be captain of this club and it was a very proud moment," he said.

"It's the highlight of my career. I was thinking that when Craig asked me on Saturday.

"He said it's not for the long haul, but it's until he gets a few senior players back.

"I was a bit nervous before the game and I stuttered a bit when I said my piece to the players, which I'm sure they'll give me grief for.

"But if a coach asks you to be captain, then you do it with pride, even if it has been a bit of a bad luck omen for us this year!"

Having seen Jamie Foster's penalty sail over after the hooter had sounded, Murrell was a bit deflated not to have won.

But he knows you can't concede 36 points and expect to pick up two points in any Super League clash.

"We should have won," he added

"After putting ourselves in a position to win, we're gutted as a team not to do that.

"But we can't concede 36 points and expect to win a game.

"We need to sort our defence out because we know we can score points from anywhere.

"We have to learn from the video and improve on things for next weekend."

With a trip to Warrington next on the horizon on Sunday, Murrell knows the games won't get any easier.

Top of the table with five points from a possible six, the Wolves are unbeaten and are again amongst the favourites to win the title.

"There are no easy matches in Super League and we don't want any," said Murrell.

"We're a good team and we know we can compete with the best teams.

"We're proud to score 36 points against last season's Grand Finalists but our defence needs to be better.

"We pride ourselves on our defence and we let ourselves down a bit.

"Warrington are a quality team and I'm sure Sandy will get us sorted out for that game."

Heading back to the ground where Rovers won promotion to Super League with a 29-16 win over Widnes in October 2007, Murrell has fond memories of the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

"It would be good to go back there as a Super League captain," said Murrell, who hopes to hold on to the skipper's armband.

"It doesn't matter where you play if you are captain.

"I still think of that night because it got us to where we are now. That was my career highlight before yesterday."

“Could well be the making of Scotty given this role. Think at times we have all been guilty of giving him an hard time and in hindsight this was probably down to JM's thoughts of what he was about. He is the club joker and always will be but by been given the armband this will help him mature and be recognised for the senior squad member that he is.”

“The responsibility of being captain seemed to bring the best out in Scott Murrell, defo his best performance of the season and he played scrum half! I will take a bite of humble pie for my past remarks.”
