Hull MP Karl Turner on safe standing debate: 'All-seat stadia can lack atmosphere'
Spectator safety is the most important factor in this issue.
However, with advances in stadium safety, there is no evidence to prove that standing cannot be accommodated in a safe and controlled environment in modern stadia.

I agree that all-seater stadia can lack atmosphere. You just have to hear the roar of the East Stand at Craven Park to realise the difference in atmosphere a safe standing area can create, the vocal support Hull KR get from the East Stand is the envy of Super League.
I, like the sporting public in Hull, have fond memories of the noise created by the Kempton at Boothferry Park or the Threepenny Stand at the Boulevard and I think if safe standing was introduced at the KC Stadium, large sections of City and FC fans would welcome this change especially if it creates a better match day experience with higher attendances and bigger revenues for the clubs.

I am already concerned that a significant number of the sporting public of Hull are already priced out of attending live matches. If the costs of changing the facilities were passed on to match day admission prices, this could mean the cheaper seating areas may face increases with the standing areas becoming the default cheapest admission areas.
By giving supporters the choice, I feel everyone benefits. Those who wish to stand can do so, while those who prefer to sit no longer have to worry about having their view obstructed.

“Yelrubsol - the safe standing areas being considered have a flip seat built into them so they can be unlocked and folded down when needed for concerts and sporting occasions that require all seating, however, the best solution would be to locate the stage at the standing end of the ground.”

“I think that it is a good idea. However, the suggestion that it will result in cheaper seats is naïve.
Also, safer standing is great for football and rugby, but if the stadium is to be used for other uses as well e.g. pop concerts, then we need to have regard for suitable seating arrangements that work for all.”
