Hull Prison: 'Old and uneconomic'
It will result in the loss of 2,600 places in "old and uneconomic" prisons and is expected to save £63m per year from the cost of running jails.
A written ministerial statement issued by the MoJ said: "Our strategy for the custodial estate is to ensure that we have sufficient places to meet the demand of the courts whilst securing best value for money for the taxpayer."

“3 strikes and your out....taken out!!
Put the serial offenders into an iso container and sink it way out to sea..lots of places in jails then. jail should be split into 3 parts for the sentence. The first 1/3 solitary with only cold food and cold cell and tasering for any minor infractions, ..then solitary for the 2nd 3rd and then when your near release you share and get to normalise so as re-integrate you.
also zero time off sentence for good behaviour etc..they should do exactly what they are given and time added on if they misbehave.
....and use American sentencing”

“What the article does not say is that the government are building a new prison which will accomodate all the prison places they will shed WHEN THE NEW PRISON IS BUILT!....just for balance!!”

“I think this a great idea and if they rebuild they can integrate sky and games consoles and ensure that cells can fit a minimum of 50 inch plasma - with good design for the individual, all prisoners could be provided with en-suite to ensure human rights are not being abused.
We could also make all Prison Guards redundant and replace them with lower paid waiters to ensure that prisoners are addressed as sir /madam and their needs are met 24 / 7
With a modern medical wing we can provide them with the latest medicines and highs and the state of the art gym will help them residents achieve optimum fitness.
A free degree and retraining will ensure that when they leave they are educated enough to realise that crime does pay and that they can have all the things hard workers strive for on the outside - free on the inside...
But the deal doesn't end there...if you want to stay outside you can access endless support and extras ...”

“canuead - how do you vote with your feet?”

“Not surprised at this hardly anyone gets sent to prison anymore and if they do many are not really there long enough to need a cell, be better if they just put 4 Z -beds in a shared room, so the prisoners do not get lonely and always have someone to play X-box with. Seems to me it is often more like a courtesy visit than a form of punishment for those sent to prison nowadays.
If justice still meant justice and length of sentence reflected the crime they would not be closing parts of any prison but building extensions on them to house who they are suppose to house, mainly the 'scum' of society.
If they need a justified reason to reduce accommodation in prisons than bring back capital punishment and backdate it to include those currently serving life sentences that should not even be alive - never mind living quite comfortably on taxpayers money!”

“Basically the Tories (and others) are preparing the way for a poorer society that takes care of itself, without any real police or court intervention. Whilst the privileged few will have bags of police protection. This also include the wealthy criminals. If you have lots of cash, then you are a government Ally. No matter who is in power. UKIP get my vote next time. Liebour and conservative governments have always promised change and never really delivered much. Surely it's time for real change. People need to vote with their feet and stop moaning.”

“ferretmonger - didn't Tony Blair & the Labour government at the time promise to be "tough on crime & tough on the causes of crime"?
That didn't happen did it?
It was also the Labour Party who signed up to the European Convention on Human Rights & look how that has helped murderers, rapists, etc. (many of them foreign immigrants) while the victims receive little or no help.
Of course there was the small connection of Tony Blair's wife being a Human Rights lawyer, what a coincidence eh?
So maybe you should take your blinkers off & look at all the facts before writing.”

“Might as well shut all the jails anyway, that's clearly the ultimate objective of the politicians. Like the EU, slowly slowly take the life blood (money) out of jails, the police, the armed forces, the monarchy and hey - Britain is destroyed - that's what they all want, seems clear to me.
So shutting part of a jail will 'save money' will it? 'Saving money' always a smokescreen for a political objective, once all the jails are shut, what next abolish the police to 'save money'?
Clearly the political elite sided with villains, foreigners, scroungers and low life years ago we the decent people need to rebel and tell these traitors to concentrate on the basics and keeping us safe... (whoops can't look after decent people we're 'expensive')
Shutting jails - what a load of rubbish.
Cut foreign aid, get out of the EU, grow spines and balls get a grip of scroungers and p*ss takers sponging off our benefits, stop EU citizens claiming for children they do not have to prove they have, milking our NHS, stop people bringing in diseases which were once eradicated here and really save money...”
