Hull bids to be named City of Culture
Hull has been named as one of the cities vying to become UK City of Culture 2013.
It is facing 29 other contenders around the country, including cultural heavyweights such as Oxford, Manchester and Belfast.
-
Victoria Square, city centre.
The winner will host a string of high-profile arts events including the Turner Prize, the Brits and the TV Baftas, as well as putting on a year-long programme of its own.
Plans for the title, which will be awarded every four years, emerged following Liverpool's success as European City of Culture in 2008.
Council leader Carl Minns said this weekend's Freedom and Clipper celebrations "will leave visitors and residents alike in no doubt that Hull has what it takes to be the UK's first ever City of Culture in 2013".
He said: "Hull has great cultural credentials, which can be seen not only in events like those taking place this weekend, but also in our nine free museums, in venues such as the Deep and Hull Truck Theatre, and in our rich maritime and social justice heritage.
"We're keen to show the judges what we have to offer and win the chance to shout about Hull's cultural attractions to a national and international audience."
While the title will bring no new public money to the winning city, the government expects the status to attract £100m in private investment and tourism.

“"Hull bids to be named City of Culture"
I've heard it all now....
Culture in Hull, whata laugh. Unless you count the displays every night on Bev Rd, Prinny Av and Town as cultural...”

So it's the happy pills then?
If emptiness is not thinking like you do then emptiness is just dandy.”

“No, Charles, I don't work for the council. I do however, have a very high opinion of the Police (operational and support staff) and I travel by car, bike and train... not to mention foot.
Generalisation is not big and clever. Condemning all motorists displays a certain lack of maturity, education, and sense. As far as condemning the Police because of one or two incidents where you have not been happy, then again, that is foolhardy. I am sorry if you are not very bright, or, as a keyboard warrior, you feel that you can express your wildly inappropriate opinions in safety. Your life must be very empty.”

If you'd read any of my comments on other stories; you'd know I don't drive and hate motorists. My "pop" at the authorities is nothing to what I could have mentioned. I though I was quite restrained given the history of incompetence and inadequacy shown by "the authorities". Perhaps you have a higher opinion of them? Perhaps you've been taking happy pills or you work for the Council.”

“D86, the reason I do not live in Liverpool is because my job is here, and my wife and family, and because I cannot really afford to move away from this poor-end of the M62. And however horrible the Hull accent is, the Liverpool one is worse!! I still do not believe that the city deserves the name "Kingston". Lord Hotham would have had no power had the city dwellers not supported him. Shows there was even apathy and lack of aspiration even then. Is it likely to change???
Lily in East Hull - no love, it is you that needs to "get a grip". Hull leaves a hell of a lot to be desired to visitors from outside, and there is a lot of work to be done to improve it. It is do-able, but we all need to pull together to do it. Sadly, I fear this city of dregs of the gene pool may struggle to aspire to anything more than a city of pondlife, and we will remain the dull city everyone (everyone south of Leicester that has heard of Hull that is) talks about.
And Charles, Cott (shouldn't those last two "t"s read "ck"?) you had to get your pop at the authorities in there didn't you?! Had a speeding ticket recently have you?”

“North Point Shopping Centre is the place to be to see the best Hull has to offer for culture.”

“I don't think Hull has a chance at this. When you look at Liverpool and Glasgow, you immediately think of The Beatles, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.. Music and Architecture. When I think of Hull, I think of fishing. It's only the educated who will realise that Wilberforce was from Hull, or even what Wilberforce did. It's only the interested that will know about The Deep. It's only the geeky that will care that The Spiders from Mars where from Hull. We have two iconic structures, and one of those is in Hessle! Hull has a rich unseen History, that isn't being tapped into. Hull has to be completely redeveloped before it could be thought of as a cultural centre..”

“Wow! I would have thought Hull University would have higher ratings that Liverpool University, but I've just looked it up on League Tables.. Hull 44th.. Liverpool 28th... Wow!”

“We see the cultural attractions of Hull every time we go down Beverley Road; there's the attractive risk of being run down by the drunken drivers or even the Humberside Police. There's the academy of excellence that has the name Endeavour. There's the grass that grows on Terry Street. You can continue to the friendly
st stephen's centre but take no photos else the made men will grab you and take you inside for a grilling. You might like to take in a Godber play at the exorbitant new "theatre" with it's abundant cubicles.
There simply isn't room to describe the cultural delights of the North Hull Estate where imagination failed it's designers and numbers had to make do for names of streets. Oh brave new world.
We must , of course not forget the delights of the orient that lie across the bridges of Hull. Visitors will flock to see Holderness Road's impressive emporia. They will be wowed by the animal enclosures of East Park. Bransholm and Sutton will amuse them and they will giggle at Noddle Hill.
I fear these delights may be too much for the sensitive "culturati" who will no doubt make their excuses and leave on the next express out of here.
Well, it's their loss, they don't know what they're missing.”

“There seems to be a lot of comparison with Hull 's drug culture and Liverpools. Can i point out that although both cities do have a serious drug problem it is a different scene altogether. Liverpool has a massive problem with cocaine, ecstacy and uppers and has a very low minority of smackheads because they are vilified by everyone. Whereas Hull's main problem is Heroin and downers thus causing a lot of theft, muggings and general depravity amongst it's users. It is this what is ruining Hull as the amount of addicts is out of control in this city and i would suggest that over half of Hull's crime figures can be put down to this form of drug abuse.”
