Hull business caught up in horse meat row
A HULL business has found itself in the middle of the horse meat debate.
The issue first came to light when samples from a large shipment labelled as beef were found to contain up to 80 per cent horse meat.

SUPPLIER: Newlands House in Inglemire Lane, where Flexi Foods is based.
It has now emerged it had been imported by Flexi Foods, a company based in Hull's Inglemire Lane, and sold to Irish business McAdam Foods.
The revelations led to a withdrawal of burgers from the shelves of Tesco, Asda, the Co-Op and Sainsbury's.

A spokesman for McAdam Foods said: "Responsibility for the provenance of the shipment lay with the UK supplier.
"The UK supplier was Flexi Foods Ltd, of Hull.
"The names of every company involved have been provided to the Irish authorities and they are the subject of an investigation in Ireland by the Food Safety Authority."
The shipment of meat was ordered from Flexi Foods by McAdam and delivered in July last year.
It was to have been stored at a McAdam processing facility but had to be moved to a warehouse owned by Northern Irish business Freeza Meats because of its size.
A routine inspection by food safety officers in September discovered labelling issues with the meat, which came from Poland.
Further testing showed the presence of horse DNA.
The McAdam spokesman said: "That shipment was the first one that came to light.
"Subsequently other tests identified other shipments of meat."
Karl Turner, MP for Hull East, said the scandal could shake consumers' faith in the city's food businesses.
He said: "This is very worrying and I am concerned this will undermine confidence in Hull's meat industry.
"Consumers must have confidence the food they buy is correctly labelled."
Mr Turner said he is worried budget cuts would make problems harder to detect.
He said: "It raises serious concerns about Government cuts to the Food Standards Agency and our fragmented food labelling system.
"The budget for meat hygiene inspectors has been cut by £12m and the Food Standard Agency budget is being cut by £11m in the next 12 months.
"These cuts have increased the risk of problems going undetected."
Although Freeza Meats was storing the contaminated beef for McAdam Foods, a spokeswoman stressed it did not own the meat.
She said the company's own beef had been tested by inspectors and declared horse-free.
Flexi Foods said their lawyers were dealing with media enquiries.
Their law firm yesterday declined to comment.

“I wish these politicians would stop harping on about budget cuts to this and budget cut to that. This horse meat scandal has nothing to do with budget cuts, it is down purely to GREED. Businesses trying to cut corners fortunately for the consumer they got caught. Wake up and smell the coffee Mr Turner.”

“he meat industry protect so many scandals that just last year have been secretly filmed, its a fact meat egg dairy industries are init for profit, the regulators spend vast amounts on advertising to brainwash the public into what we eat, where we go, when to do, make it taste to sell etc, Why are people so dead inside how did we get this lost and blind to the beauty of these animals all animals none of them we need to eat to survive, after working in my dads butcher trade i studied the human body and nature, i ate nothing but a plant based diet afterwards, that was 40 years ago and i dont know what illness means, and i have allowed my self to think for myself, and act for myself, and make the connection to real life, we are all extraordinary and have the ability at some point in out lives to make decisions, you either take the right one or you follow the road to hell walk asleep,"

“Karl Turner the shameless buffoon is happy to spout off about this to try and make political captial.
Yet is strangely silent on the NHS disaster that resulted in at least1500 people dying in disgusting conditions.
Why is he and the rest of our MP's silent, because it happened whilst they where in power.
So tell us Karl/Dianne/Alan and lets not forget kimin and his crowd, how do you feel about the thousands that died in misery whilst you where in Government?
No one has died from eating horse burger as far as I am aware.
Indeed all it does is confirm what many of us have thought about cheap processed food for many years. It's cheap for a reason.”

“@snothill. You haven't thought it through, less imports mean less supply = price goes through the roof. I understand your sentiment but I really don't want to be paying a fiver for 6 economy burgers and £30 for a small Sunday roast. Though British meat producers would have a very profitable time.”

“It has already been proven beyond all doubt that the contaminated beef is coming in from France, Ireland and Poland.
Therefore the British Government should order, via the EU food regulators, the immediate banning of meat exports from these countries, until further notice.
This is excatly what happened to British beef exports when the EU, driven by French farmers, crippled our beef and farming industry in general during the BSE (so-called mad cow disease) during the 1990's.
Trouble is, our politicians don't have the guts to implement this ban. What goes around, should come around, in my opinion.”

“I'm bothered about it. I would happily have a horse burger. I've had Shark, Bison, Kangeroo, & Ostrich but that was clearly labelled and must have passed inspection. The worry I have is the horses that get sent to slaughter and the old and infirm. They can have had vet drugs for ailments and a couple are known to cause cancer. I'd happily eat a prime bit of horse, not an old nag thats come from god knows where and could possibly kill me.”

“I don't have a problem with horse meat - it tastes good, like any meat if it's cooked properly. It's only a culture thing, like dogs and cats. I wished I'd known where they were dumping the burgers, I'd have been there with my van!”
