THE PUBLIC have been warned that cash machines in Hull may be being targeted by crooks.

Police have found two machines tampered with in the Anlaby Road and Holderness Road areas after being alerted by suspicious members of the public.

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: "Nobody is thought to have had any money stolen when using the cash machine, but damage had been caused to the front of the machine."

Police said that the scam uses devices added to a cash machine and not noticed by many people who will make their withdrawals as normal.

The spokesman said: "Criminals use the copied details to produce a fake magnetic stripe card, which will be used - with the correct PIN – at cash machines or shops that haven’t yet been upgraded to chip and PIN. Customers who shield the keypad when they enter their PIN are much less likely to fall victim to this type of fraud."

Police warned people in Hull to be vigilant when using machines and watch out for 'out of order' notices on any cash point which directs people to another machine.

The spokesman said: "Some of the devices used are very well designed and can often be difficult to spot. Do not be afraid to ask the question to the bank, if you suspect anything suspicious."

“Once again the HDM gives us half a story. It would be useful for us to know which machines have been targeted so we know if we may have used them. And I agree that the banks should check the machines daily, why can't they do it at the same time as filling it up or is that too much like common sense?”

“Let's face it. Apart from covertly catching motorists for speeding the police can't catch anyone without being tipped off.”

“So, money stolen from the public by crooks tampering with cashpoints? That's nothing compared to the amount of money the banks themselves have extorted and stolen from each and every one of us in the form of bonuses, rogue trading and mis-selling. The real crooks OWN the cashpoint.”
