A LEADING city councillor says he would support an increase in council tax next year.

The move has been made possible with additional government funding.
Ministers recently set aside another £450m to pay councils the equivalent of a 1 per cent rise for two years if they agree to freeze bills for a further 12 months.

But deputy city council leader Daren Hale says the authority might have to put up council tax charges from next April to help ease the squeeze on its own budgets.
Reporting to this week's full council meeting, he said: "I do feel that we have to consider putting the council tax up to protect the city's financial base moving forward as national Government continues to take, without mercy, the local authority budget allocation.
"A one-year, one-off sweetener from the Government equivalent to 1 per cent when they continue to remove money from their allocation to councils certainly leaves a sour taste in my mouth."
Cllr Hale, who is also the portfolio holder for finance, said: "If taken, it would also compound our financial position, leading to bigger cuts next year.
"I know others may disagree with my views, so I look forward to a debate on these matters at budget-setting time."
Liberal Democrat deputy leader Councillor Mike Ross said: "This is the first time Labour has floated the idea of putting up council tax charges next year.
"We will be watching what happens to this proposal over the next few weeks."
A growing number of councils across the UK have already indicated their intention to reject the Government's grant scheme for freezing council tax.
Last year, when councils freezing tax received funding equivalent to a 2.5 per cent increase, one in ten declined the offer and opted for a rise instead.

“how dare the council be considering upping the council tax! they are cutting frontline services, ripping off the elderly and disabled by cutting funding for their needs and they still want to raise the council tax?! where does our £120 per month payments go? lining the councils back pockets? this is a joke! make the people on jsa pay something towards council tax and housing benefit! why should all the hard working people suffer?!”

"I have touched on a similar subject before, whereby you don't need to have your own internet account if a close neighbour lets you log into theirs"
Yes of course they do - it happens all the time. Or are you just assuming that they won't mind and so not bothering to tell them? Probably illegal, but from someone who admits to opening other people's mail that is probably a technicality.”

“Ghostwriter69, I think I would be loathe to tell you what I had cancelled. You would probably gloat (God i hope you don't want me to come round and log into your account, NO THANKS).
I have touched on a similar subject before, whereby you don't need to have your own internet account if a close neighbour lets you log into theirs.”

“It comes as no surprise that he has said this and it is also no surprise that he is a Labour councillor. They all feel that they should have unregulated dips into our finances to fund their pet projects, and ambitions to be all things to all men.”

what a plank, it's the government that is cutting the council tax benefit
You, India7, and Jezhull are either Lib-Dem councillors or you need urgent help.”

“KWL is a wholly-Council owned company, and the Chairman is not paid. It has also returned money to the Council coffers over the years to stop further Council Tax increases. Who is the "smart guy" and no doubt he would he rather the profits were going out of the Hull Taxpayers coffers and up the Motorwat to Sheffield like they did when Kiers had the contract?”
