Hull has stolen a march on some of the biggest cultural capitals in the world for the premiere of The Firework-Maker's Daughter – and there is nowhere director John Fulljames, pictured, would rather start this globe-trotting adventure.

John, who is an associate director of opera at the Royal Opera House by day, believes Hull Truck is an ideal place to start this particular hero's quest.

"I'm delighted," he says. "The show is an Opera North project and I know they've wanted to do something in Hull for a long time, so this is an ideal show to start with.

"It's great to think that Hull's getting the jump on places like London and New York – where we're going next.

"We're going to go around the world, and our journey's beginning in Hull."

Mixing puppetry, live performance, music and projection to create magical effects inspired by Indonesian shadow puppetry, John says creating the show has been a challenge, as has remembering who the youthful target audience is.

"Kids are always the more ruthless critics," he says.

"If they don't like something, they'll tell you straight away, so we've absolutely focused on making sure everything is as good as it can possibly be.

"It's a great family show and I'm sure Hull will enjoy it – before everyone else does."
