Hull fireworks display axed for second year
Hull City Council's fireworks display has been axed for the second year running.
Councillor Terry Geraghty, portfolio holder for leisure and culture at the council, said: "The council has significantly less central funding and, consequently, we have to make tough decisions about where money for city events is spent.

Extinguished: The last fireworks display in 2010
"We are spending on events that will bring tourism to the city and have an impact on the economy. We have decided not to hold a firework display this year but we will continue to work with partners to ensure the safety of residents on Bonfire Night."

“Hull City Council had no problem finding £200,000 to fund The Freedom Festival!”

“Well that's the joy of having an grumpy OAP of over 70 in charge of culture he hates fireworks, he stopped the display on Orchard Park, along with the one of the other Labour Councillors Joyce something or other, much to the peoples shock and who gained from it no one only that misery guts, but as I have said before you voted for these wonderful people either by a x in the box or by not voting at all in which case you let them win.”

“It has nothing to do with money, OUR council cannot simply be bothered.
The firework display used to be one of the most attended and FREE events in the city.
When held around the Princes Quay, thousands were there, when it was on the Marina it was huge, people every where.
So how has it now become something of a political football, for it to be used as something "central government" took away from us!
The event, cost between 35K and 80K depending on who is talking and obviously, who buys the fireworks.
How can the council not make that money on the night and for it to be funded for the next year?
I am no businessman, but with the prospect of up to 10,000+ people attending here are a few ideas.
1. Hold it on the Marina area and charge everyone who parks nearby a couple of pound, make wasteland available for parking. There are only a couple of access points left now, so very easy to police.
2. Council run food vendors only as it is a council run event, or if space let out to private enterprises, charge them a decent amount.
3. Council run beer tents, making it unnecessary to go to the local pubs, but they would still profit from such an event.
4. A proper fairground, again set up on derelict land close by, plots all charged for again,
5. As we are on the marina, hired craft to go onto the Humber, Hey we could even use one of the old paddle steamers.... oh sorry forgot we let that get turned to scrap,.. or a replica, nostalgia tours across to New Holland and back, again charging a premium rate... The Steamer, if bought could be used all year as a tourist attraction, working, not like a restaurant stuck on Hessle Foreshore.....
6. Ask local businesses to contribute, commit to one place for a set number of years and allow the event to build, like the Freedom festival, before we changed it to a bouncy castle exhibit.
It seems whenever we have something good going on, the council will take it away, or make it so cheap, people just stay away. We are a city, with huge potential, yet run like a little town and when the crowd gets a bit big, listen to the 20 or so nimby's that complain.
Simply put, the decision not to have something like a Firework display and blame the sitting government is unbelievable. 2 years now, we have gone without, coincidentally as we have a Labour council and not a Labour government. Shame there is no one there that could see the City could make this a big event that would pay for itself and more, rather than, as it has now become, simply another PATHETIC political tool for very insular members of our own elected trustees.”

“By waste of money ! How does that work out ?
I know it's not everyone's thing but for some households it might have been the only option for them ? Yet it's a known fact the council wastes more on so called fact finding missions and so on ! I would love too know the total cost for meals and beverages that our council consumes during its meetings ? What's next ? I know lets scrap Christmas !”

“Wish Goole Town Council would follow suit and axe the display in West Park, for two reasons 1. In times of austerity it is not needed. 2. Because of the amount of people attending someone is going to get seriously injured as no police and only 1 ambulance attends.”
