People in Hull have an above-average chance of becoming a victim of burglary, new figures have shown.

Figures released today show Hull was ranked the eight-worst burglary hotspot in the UK.

Householders in the city are 37 per cent more likely to be the victim of a break-in than the national average.

London was the worst, with people 55 per cent more likely to be burgled, and Preston was the least burgled – 67 per cent less likely than the national average.

However, the results of the survey come just a week after the Mail revealed Hull's burglary rate was at an historic low.

Fewer than six burglaries took place every day from April 2008 to the end of March 2009.

The figures released today are based on analysis of hundreds of thousands of insurance claims from across the UK in the past four years by Endsleigh Insurance.

Rhiannon Harris, of the insurance company, said: "Burglary rates have spiked recently and, according to the Government, that could be a result of the recession.

"It is more vital than ever that homeowners take extra care when they are leaving their property for any period of time.

"Domestic burglary-figures may have dropped substantially over the past decade but this period of economic gloom means there is no room for complacency when it comes to protecting your home."

“Just seen the report on TV, about the the raise in insurance fraud maybe with Endsliegh's open door policy, students are using it to cover their tutition fees. Perhaps Endsleigh need to take a long look at their business and how they operate to see how they can help reduce crime either in the form of break ins and in the form of fraud. Instead of fingering areas of the country for being to blame.”

“Have just found out Endsliegh have an unlocked room policy, which means they cough up even if you leave the building and your room insecure. No wonder the students arn't bothered and no wonder burgulars go for student accomodation and is it any wonder their is less of a change in student areas, because this does not make people responsible for their belongings does it!”

“Most burglaries are carried out to fund a drug addiction. Tackle the drug problem and you indirectly tackle burglaries.

Childish "throw away the key" comments get us nowhere.

Current drugs policy is not working. Prohibition does not work and will never work.”

“Like my name says burglars are scum of the earth. I hope some are reading this. Go out, get a job and buy just like I have to. Oh, I am sorry, that's too hard to do is it. Maybe if we had more police doing police work instead of hiding behind fences etc with speed camera guns it would help. Burglars when caught should be given prison sentances, not let off with community service and a petty fine. What does burglary from a bank carry as a prison sentance. Why should burglary from the public be any different. Get them locked up where they belong and throw the key away. Alteratively put them in the army.”

“Just looked at these figures again and it does prove what the police are saying. Here you go fewer than 6 so must be more than 5. so 5.5 times 365 equals burglaries for the year = 2008 per year. My area has 4000 homes, Hull has 110,000 homes Therefore 2008 times 4000 divided by 110,000 equals the average for the number of burglaries in an area the size of mine in a year, answer 73. Being a student area obviously does not help, but still 112 is a lot better than 208 repeats without the originals. It also meanns we need to try even harder as always, but it does show the police figures are higher than Endsleigh.”

“Almost 2 years to the day I and others were asked if we would support the use of smart water. I asked how many return burglaries their were. The reply was after some time on the computer 208 take note thats how many these scum went back too the same address. Total No of burglaries in the last 12 Months for the same area is 112 all recorded by the same people using the same methods. So I know the rate has gone down how I prove that I do not know at the moment, but I know I do not trust Endsleigh Insurance, and will be questioning the police in my area.”
