“This highlights the root of most of Hulls problems, too many people do not value education.

High skill companies don't come here because the standard of education is not high enough.

The council and schools need to get the parents to place a greater importance on their children getting a good education, which is not easy as a lot of the parents don't have much educational skills themselves. They need to get to the parents gefore the kids get to school, because once they are at school and fall behind in the first couple of years, all they then do is fall further and further behind.

Not an easy problem to solve, and no quick fix I'm afraid.

Maybe if the council put up posters saying Get Educated it might have some impact, instead of the politically motivated posters about the cuts.

Or they could have spent some of the millions they have on Rovers new stand on this issue.

The council need to get their priorites right.”

“As someone who worked in state schools for over thirty years, I can tell you that lots of schools massage their attendance and truancy figures in order to keep the inspectorial wolves from their doors. Declared truancy figures are just the tip of the iceberg. Teachers at the frontline bear the unrecognised burden of practical hassle caused by truancy and sporadic attendance. How can you teach a cumulative course effectively when significant numbers of pupils are missing and from day to day it will probably not be the same pupils. Horrific juggling acts are required to keep courses of study moving along. It is a national disgrace partly caused by unthinking and draconian government interference in the business of education which should be joyful and enlightening. Instead it turns so many children off. Even so many parents are clearly abnegating their responsibilities - not just to their children but to society at large.”

“What these kids don't understand is that when they reach 30 ish and not being able to read and write they have about as much chance of getting a job as a lamp post. At least the lamp post has a job to do. What happens when they want to get married and have kids,go out for a beer,go to football/rugby matches and keep up with the mates who have a job ,these things all cost money . We all like an easy life but you need to work to earn that right. When I was 15 years old I used to bike to Brough starting off before 7.0am to get there for 7.30 start, bike home at 5.0pm and at 7.0pm bike to night school till 9.15 pm then bike home. We did not have time to get bored, and most of us got our City and Guilds of London in our respective trades. Because of our education we could always get a job.Now we sit back and laugh at the kids playing truant because of them will be losers all their life. If this email helps one kid to start learning then the message as been worthwhile. joe”

“of course, you could re-engage the kids.. ask the obvious; why don't they want to be in school? it's not cos they want to ride around the estate.. its cos they can't see a future and academia doesn't offer what they want.”

“Call me old fashioned but I'll lay odds that the parents, or more likely the single parent of the vast majority of these truants, exist on state benefits and the poor kids are never encouraged to attend school, meaning they are disadvantaged from the day they are born.
It should be a condition of receiving state benefits that any dependent children attend school regularly, and if they don't, reduce the benefits pro rata.”
