Hull's Welly Club says Beverley Road flats plan could threaten its future
A Hull nightclub boss is urging regulars to oppose new plans for flats next the venue.
The Welly Club opened in Beverley Road in 1913 and has seen some of the world's biggest stars take to its stage.

But director Dave Mayes said plans to convert a neighbouring former showroom into 22 flats could threaten its long-term future.
He said: "We have put in an objection because we just don't think it is practical to have people living next door to the club, particularly during the summer months when they will want to have their windows open."

“How about the Welly owners buy the building and rent it out as office space? It'd be protecting their interests.. be a shame to lose the place although it is a bit of a dive it seems to be making quite a killing these days and that part of Bev rd does need redevelopment.”

“oldgoldone - You're right about using the railway as a commuter line into Hull from the east. I proposed this to John Prescott and Hull City Council when Mr. P. was responsible for transport. He and the Council did not even acknowledge my letters. My other proposal was to run trains into the old Springhead site near Maplewood Avenue and Anlaby Common, thus allowing a shuttle service to be introduced. Again, nothing from the Council.
When the old Hull & Barnsley Railway was to be upgraded to cope with a large increase in imported coal traffic (twenty two trains a day), those residents of East Hull, to which I referred in my earlier post, were the ones who started to complain about the noise, shaking and possible derailments.
As for the H&B as a commuter line from places such as Howden, Little Weighton and Willerby; what a great opportunity missed. When the line was still being used as a passenger line it took eleven minutes to get into the centre of Hull from Willerby. How long by car these days?”

“The developer has already started work, this story suggest that is without planning permission.
Offices occupied during the daytime would be much more sensible for the location.”

“Oh, Clem_, I think it must have been rather more than 'a few years back' when east Hull residents were able to complain about anything more than ghost trains disturbing them. The Hull-Hornsea and Hull-Withernsea tracks and trains have been gone for decades - more's the pity! Oh what a difference to both the ease and speed of commuting from Holderness into Hull those lines would make, were they still open and running trains! The same is true of another stupid error on the part of the 'rationalisation' of Britain's railways: were it still open, with trains running, the line from Willerby to Hull would be a great asset.”

“Welly is one of the few buildings along Beverley Road that looks like it isnt still recovering from a Luftwaffe attack, and its that rarest of beasts, a Hull financial success story. As for flats along the part of Beverley Road plagued by 'migrant worker' criminality/drug user central/Terry Street crime den hostel, who in their right mind would want one there? Leave Welly to boost Huls image, stick the flats where people actually would be safe living.”

“A few years back, some residents of East Hull complained about the railway running on the embankment behind their bungalows and the noise and shaking it produced. The bungalows were relatively new but the railway had been there since 1885. There's nowt so queer as folk!”

“I would suggest that the developer will have a problem selling the flats when they are next to a noisy nightclub.
Beverley Road by and large is a scraggy looking dump that requires lots of redevelopement.”

“they need to get it in writing, becuase flats can change hands, i know a bloke who bought a house with a bus stop outside that had been there over 20 yrs and wanted it moving, what a t+t”

“Quite simply if they do build the flats they cannot put noise restrictions on the Welly Club in my eyes. I know there will be complaints about noise from day 1. If I built a house next to a swerage farm, I cannot complain about the smell!!!!! Where is common sense when you need it?”
