Cllr Wareing said: "We are all appealing against this.

"The indefinite suspensions are particularly harsh because we feel the punishment certainly doesn't reflect our alleged crimes.

"We feel it is far too severe when all we were doing was reflecting the views of many people in the party over the impact of government cuts on local services."

Before last month's budget-setting meeting, all three signed up to a new national anti-cuts movement launched by local Labour councillors.

Cllr Wareing, who had urged fellow councillors to rethink budget proposals to cut jobs and services, said: "We remain Labour councillors and we will carry on doing our ward work as normal.

"From that point of view, everything stays the same.

"The only thing the Labour group has lost is our input into group meetings."

He said the trio remained unrepentant over their stance.

Last week, Labour councillors on the authority's Riverside area committee removed Cllr Wareing as its chairman in a no-confidence vote.

The move also meant he lost a £4,700 special responsibility allowance for being the committee's chairman.

He is the most high-profile of the trio, having previously been a Labour cabinet portfolio holder.

He also finished runner-up to Karl Turner in a selection contest to find a successor to John Prescott as Labour's parliamentary candidate for Hull East.

Councillor Colin Inglis, who tabled the motion to unseat Cllr Wareing last week, said: "It was a relatively straightforward issue.

"When a majority on a committee doesn't have any confidence in the chairman, the chairman has to go."

Ironically, Cllr Inglis was the last person to be suspended from the Labour group after being charged with historic child abuse.

He was reinstated after being cleared of all the charges following a crown court trial.

However, the latest suspensions have angered some Labour activists.

Party member Mark Anfield said: "I am disgusted such actions are taking place within a democratic organisation and smacks to me of bullying and dictatorship.

"Clearly, these people are principled and not about to sell out the people who have voted them to their positions.

"I know Gill Kennett personally and admire her reluctance to follow the herd and allow central government to dictate and decimate local services."

“Concillor Wareing was turned away from a recycling centre a couple of weeks ago as he did not have any proof of address or the relevent blue pass , I as a member of the public saw him and his wife getting frustrated as they were refused entry , its not one rule for us , one rule for you , anyway it made my day ;)”

“The next and most obvious step for these three 'proper' councillors is to resign from The Labour Party and stand as independents.

In my opinion they should do very well if they decided to stand independently as their stance is based on principles and honesty. The public WILL recognise this, as it is generally seen that too many politicians lack these basic characteristics, and are totally fed up of the general dishonesty within politics anyway!

Given that we are all sick of party politics, it would be perfect for Hull to have a council run by independent councillors - real democracy?

Best of luck to these three.”

“I commend these three Councillors for doing what they are supposed to do, represent the views and interests of their constituents. For me this highlights how badly broken our political system is, particularly in view of political parties. Personally I feel that whips should be outlawed as blatantly undemocratic. How can any elected official be expected to automatically follow the party line irrespective of the effects on their constituents? This is completely illogical.

I would never vote for anyone who is a member of any of the main stream political parties as they are all subject to this dictatorial practice. This is a shame, as many individuals within the main parties may be well meaning and want to do the right thing as seen here. However, what use is this if they are unable to deviate from the party line dictated to them? Perhaps its time that we the people remember that government gets its power and authority from us, not the other way around. We can express this, and change things, by voting for independents who will not have a conflict of interest. We have the power to do this, so why don't we? If there are no independents standing in your ward then consider standing yourself. Alternatively you may know someone who you think would do a good job and you can persuade them to stand. I often think that the best people for these positions would probably have to be talked into putting themselves forward.”

“The Labour Group should be turning their fire on the Tory lead Coalition and working with other big cities. Persecuting their own is very unproductive, especially as the rebellion was on socialist principles. Brady is vying for Pickles best little poodle award.”

“Am I mistaken here but aren't Councillors elected to represent the voting public?
If these three councillors thought it was not in their constituents interest to agree to the proposed budget, then surely they were doing what they are paid to do, irrespective of political party allegiance.
I think these three Councillors should be applauded for the strength of character they have shown in defiance of party orders.

“I admire the stance of these three Labour councillors. These three guys had the courage of their convictions and voted accordingly.
Unlike the Honourable member for Hull East, who when voting on post office closures voted in favour despite participating in a high profile campaign against.”
