A PROPOSED drive-in movie to be held in Hull has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

Drive-In Force planned to bring the largest outdoor screen in Europe to the city on Saturday to show two films to people watching from their cars.

The company was selling tickets at £16 per car and planned to host the event at Walton Street car park in west Hull.

However, despite advertising campaigns across the city just 200 tickets were sold for the 2,000 capacity event.

Mal Wharton, 35, director of Drive-In Force, said he was upset he had to cancel the event.

He said: "It is with regret that we have to announce that the Drive-In Movie shows have been cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

"Unfortunately, only around 10 per cent of tickets have sold in advance of the shows and we have had to make the decision for the shows not to go on.

"It's sad news but the lack of sales forced my hand."

People who had purchased tickets for The Jungle Book 2 and Dirty Dancing have been promised a full refund."

He added: "Naturally, I am refunding all tickets and need to get the word out that the show will in fact not go on.

"Everyone who has already bought a ticket will be fully refunded, this process can taken between three days and three weeks, however all ticket sales money is absolutely secure and the refund process will be started imminently."

“I had a flyer put on my car at the Walton St park and ride , I did consider taking my 10 year old to one of the films , but when I saw it was £16 for 2 of us changed my mind ,£10 for 2 more reasonable”

    “Kevin,

Did I, or did I not, say that there are SOME people in this city that would do that. Not ALL of them as you are implying”

“They should've canvassed the local car clubs and youths who are into mod-ing their cars.

They could've linked this to a custom car show event, had a bit of a trick driving display and mod supplier displays/sales, and shown a couple of films at the end of the evening that would appeal to the car pimping brigade.

The cops could attend and video thoose present as a pro-active intelligence gathering project (not that it would ever occur to a Humberside copper to actually DO something like that) and the land would be green and peaceful. With a benevolent King ruling over us from a fairytale castle. And the police would be effective....Ooops! Starting to drift into the realms of fantasy there Jones.”

“I moved from Hull to the USA in 1978, I caught the tail end of the "Drive-in" era. I went to a couple but the sound system was soon outdated, who wants to listen to movie over a crackly microphone. If it's not going to work in a place that has much better weather, it's probably not going to work in Hull in March. I will say that I am still very proud to be from Hull and defend it whenever I can. There are some wonderful things going on in and around Hull, but I don't think the "Drive-In" was a good idea.”

    “Kevin,

If you complain about how Hull has gone down hill then sod off to London or somewhere else where teenagers are shot dead every day.

Hull may not be the best place in the world but it is definately not the worst either.

I've lived in Hull all my life and I love it. I've gone through school, college and now have a job and somewhere to live and I wouldn't move anywhere else.

I think the movie screen would have been great, I would have gone to see Dirty Dancing, £16 is a bit high of a price though and I agree with the others it is the wrong time of year.”

“No, it doesn't, to answer your question.

“If you WERE going to Walton St on Saturday £16, cheaper to go to the cinema (vue, St. Spephens or Odeon) & warmer”

“2000 tickets? 2000 cars on Walton Street? And they'd all have been able to see the screen? 100 cars in a row - 20 rows...I wouldn't like to be at the back.”

“Does D86 refer to the pennant number of a Type 42 destroyer? (Birmingham or Coventry). Gen question”

“Kevin, I can't say any 12 or 13 year old child, or any sort of chav-like youth (of which I assume you're trying to refer to) has ever stopped me doing anything in my day-to-day routine in this city, nor should they yours. Over sensationalisation in the media has everbody stereotyped to a 'T' because of what clothes they wear and what area they are from, not all these tracksuited youths are "bad 'un's". If 12 and 13 year olds are bothering you, tell them to begger off and grow up!

Hull hasn't got any worse in the last few years for crime, it's just the fact more and more things are reported on. There are more and more accessible outlets for news. Because of the internet, news and RUMOUR gets around quicker, the net and media make it all the more believable, which in return frightens people into becoming "curtain twitchers".”
